Forums - Gaming - CliffyB: Most shooters take themselves “so seriously”

While speaking in the latest episode of Qore, Epic’s Cliff Bleszinski stated that most shooters take themselves “so seriously”, which was apparently one of the biggest challenges developer, People Can Fly, faced while working on the shooter.

“The biggest challenge with this game was getting to the point where we could develop an IP that was fun, something that was pulpy, but wasn’t really over the line [right], there’s a really fine line there, if you look at where the state of shooters are right now it’s very serious” he said.

He later added that you could “put a montage of all these military shooters together and you wouldn’t even recognize them”

“Bulletstorm’s just like screw that, let’s just put a big boot in peoples face, let’s have crazy lines of dialogue, over the top weapons, just put the fun back in the first person shooter. I think its hands down one of the most fun games I’ve played in years.”

This is why I'm getting Bulletstorm.

This is what I miss from franchises like Timesplitters. They didn't take themselves seriosuly at all-- heck, you could play as a goldfish bowl robot or a cactus wearin denim overalls. Also why I can't stand Call of Duty.

Looking forward to Bulletstorm, and for "screw it why not" fun.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

The only military shooter franchise I like is Battlefield, because its awesome and made to be fun. COD takes itself to serious and tries to take the Counter Strike gameplay on which fails.

Otherwise Unreal Tournament, Half-Life, Serious Sam, etc are my shooters.

Wow, this thread introduced me to Bulletstorm for the first time, and it looks awesome.

Imo, it's COD ---- TImeSplitters, no middle ground. Either it's realism or nothing! If it's new and innovative with fun gameplay, why not!

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

This is why I still play Unreal Tournament III.

Compared to UT3 games like COD are garbage. Shit like that will be forgotten with time, but the fast paced, in your mug kind of shit Unreal Tournament brings has survived this entire generation for me.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Not a selling point for me...

Most games in general take themselves way too seriously ...

So true.
