Can The Last Story usurp Final Fantasy as the best selling console JRPG?

Yes 65 27.31%

No 173 72.69%

Total:238

Do you lot even know how the situation is like here in Europe before you post your comments, the reason why games like Pokemon and FFVII sold well in Europe even though we had never heard of them before was because they recieved a heavy marketing push games, they were practically everywhere. DQ sales increase with each game released over here because people are being made aware of the game even though VIII was the first game we got and it sold more here then in the US as did IX and we're not even that much behind the US in MH sales either. Many RPGs have struggled over here because publishers stealth release games which doesn't create enough exposure to anything not in the FF and DQ brand, not saying TLS will sell like mad as that's down to how Nintendo push the game but don't make sweeping statements that the is no audience here because that's not true the's actually a sizable audience here that's not helped by wayward releases.

If you stealth release your games don't expect big sales.

When will people learn, in JRPG's, people don't care about Online play. This isn't a FPS, where it's boring. Make the game good so it doesn't need these terrible additions put in to the game. All this screams is, "we are desperate for people to buy the game cause it's not very good".

Poor Last story. Its doomed to niche status until the 5th release. I'll buy it.

Yes, because JRPGs are selling incredibly well on Wii in Europe.

There's basically no JRPG audience on Wii in Europe. Then again there's no JRPG audience in Europe on any console except for Final Fantasy.

Yeah because pokemon totally flopped here in Europe.

Pokemon Wii relative to Pokemon DS was a flop (please read my original post with some care). And given we're comparing to FF games 340K for a main numbered FF title in EMEAA would be an absolute flop of megaton proportions. So if you're suggesting 340K for one of the biggest JRPG franchises of all time (perhaps THE biggest) is an indicator of FFXIII beating sales potential for The Last Story in EMEAA then you are gravely mistaken.

Fact: Sales history of JRPGs on Wii in EMEAA territories suggests The Last Story has little chance of unseating the FF franchise as biggest JRPG on home consoles this generation.

Personally, as a potential franchise, I think if it can get to 500K in EMEAA it means there's potential for it to see significant growth in subsequent entries. But this first game won't be a FF killer, except as a remote chance in Japan. Even in Japan JRPG in Wii doesn't instill a great deal of confidence in the FF killing sales potential for TLS. It'll need to almost double the sales of Monster Hunter Tri to kill FFXIII. Do people expect it to kick MH Tri's arse to that extent? I'm thinking it won't get past MH Tri in Japan, let alone come close to FFXIII.

Tbh, i feel like these comments are true. depite the Wiis superior userbase, there is a possibility there is simply not many JRPG gamers in Europe or the US to buy it on the Wii. even in Japan we dont know how it will be recieved. but i still think that this could do similar numbers to FF12 or FF13, if its marketed by Nintendo, because of the way they've pushed Dragon Quest here in the west.

but we simply dont know at this point, because the Wii is a casual console.

Do we have pre order numbers for Japan, the game goes on sale in about a month, and i think those would be a good indicator of what we can expect.

Check best sellers in Amazon Japan for Pre-orders.

lol no. Check COMG. It's not super reliable but it's much more reliable than amazon.

Hardly.  COMG covers a fraction the market amazon.jp does, and both skew more to specific niches and insular trends than the market at large.  Both are terrible indicators for total JP game sales.

VGC's hard on for COMG, and simultaneous dismissal of amazon.jp, is an inherently logical fallacy that I'll never get. :/

My first thought is a big no

but then I think about it... And I realize that what I really mean is a big fucking no

Yeah, pretty much this.

The better question imo is if it can outsell FF1 (520k). Personally my expectations are pretty low (150k fw, 250-300k lt), but I can see how if handled right it could do better.

For those wondering, here's Sakaguchi's previous notable RPG debuts (rounded shipments or Enterbrain data)...

  • Final Fantasy (FC) 520,000 (director, concept)
  • Chrono Trigger (SFC) 2,030,000 (supervisor)
  • Super Mario RPG (SFC) 1,470,000 (supervisor)
  • Bahamut Lagoon (SFC) 475,000 (supervisor)
  • Parasite Eve (PS) 1,010,000 (producer, concept)
  • Blue Dragon (360) 205,000 (producer, concept)
  • Lost Odyssey (360) 110,000 (producer, concept)

what difference does it make??? the real ?s are if the game will actually be good and if its even getting released outside of Japan. I hope so for both points

So, it seems a lot of people are expecting over 1 million for the Last Story. I hope it does it. And a couple people think it might pass the 1.8 million ffxiii numbers. I had no idea this thingg was so big.

That's because it really isn't...

It reminds be a bit of Killzone 2.

At best it looks like a Final Fantasy knock off, from the name, to the posters, the music, it's a Final Fantasy game.

It will be better than any Final Fantasy since IX because It should at the least be good, not mediocre.

Because of what ?

Hironobu Sakaguchi was responsible mainly for the gem FF games, FFIV-FFIX. He is behind The Last Story and his design philosophy is similar to when he made FFI and FFVII. If you saw all the Iwata Ask episodes you'll see the way the game was developed and how much promise it has.

My confidence towards this game's success (possibly) in the West is that it has a real-time action combat system that vaguely reminds me of Gears (to a point, anyway), and the graphical style is one that the West should be more receptive to than say, a Tales game or something like Blue Dragon or Star Ocean

O.O

If you look at shots of it, its a kinda tactical, sorta squad-based, real-time combat with the way the camera works, it looks closer to a medieval Gears or Resident Evil Mercenaries, or even an Assassin's Creed, than your stereotypical JRPG

Now I see what you mean. I had not seen combat gameplay before.

i hope it does, that might open SE eyes to the fact that REAL JRPGs arent dead.

Obviously SE knows JRPG's aren't dead. The top JRPG's this gen will be under Sakaguchi's belt and they no longer have him. When Sakaguchi left SE the stocks went with him. Microsoft financially backed his company.
