Only for the PS4 as Sony, if I am not mistaken, owns a huge chunk in the blu ray business and gets royalties for entertainment using blu ray format (I believe I got this info from one of Squilliam's posts).

For this reason, I don't see the NextBox and Mii using blu ray. Why fund one of your main competitors?

HD DVD for the NextBox and Mii is my safest choice, but we may be surprised with both Microsoft and Nintendo. I could see Microsoft trying to position Live as the console version of Steam and Nintendo doing it's own format, but this is just speculation.

This scenario is Lose/Lose for Microsoft. By not supporting BluRay in their next console, they'd be handing a lot of sales over to PS4. Once BluRays are the #1 format, to not have a BluRay drive would be a huge mistake... one MS won't make. As much as they hate putting money in Sony's pockets, would giving Sony all the extra sales due to being a BluRay player be any better?

When I moved out, I had an xbox to play DVDs... now I use my 360... I've never had a dedicated DVD player. a lot of people like me, especially if they are HD latecomers, are going to want a console they can play their movies on. It's critical that the console do it. MS would be hurting themselves by ignoring BluRay...

Personally i am hoping for mandatory installs for all games, games are supposed to be run from a HDD (especially a solid state drive) not a disc. If companies do this, one DVD will be enough for just about every game.

Rareglove Nintendo hates to use others company format, they alwais create his own format since forever, the game cube never used DVD, and did you know the wii don't use DVD's exactly? the wii use another type of format, microsoft may use blu-ray, but i doub a lot nintendo get to use the blue ray disk

Personally i dont think PS4 will be released for a very long time, but at that time i think Sony couldve already developed the next format after blu ray, and blu ray will already be very cheap to implement into devices, like DVD is now. so i can see nintendo or microsoft using blu ray at that point.

or they could develop a higher standard of blu ray. and just keep using that. the problem with digital downloads is that not everyone has a broadband conection, not everyone has an internet connection (i would assume), especially in the emerging markets.

Why not an industry standard format? Theres no harm in say Microsoft and Nintendo working together on a common format.

You mean like Blu-ray?  For most of the tech industry, it is the format.  I believe Apple is the only company now completely abstaining from the format.  Microsoft even supports it for Windows directly, which means they have to pay a small royalty to the BDA.

I think 720 and PS4 will use BD next gen (didn't see that as an option).  Wii will probably use a variant.

The only thing MS would have to be concerned about is the image among its fans in thinking that they are supporting a "Sony" format.  "Sony" because Panasonic actually owns more of the format than Sony.  As far as I know, MS supports DVD and CD, which Sony has some ownership of.

If anything, the PSP GO should be a lesson about discless formats.

They could easily work on a variant which has a lower royalty base and from that they could charge a fee to the end user if they want to enable regular Blu Ray format playback. That way they can turn it into a revenue source instead of another cost which adds to the fixed base cost of their machines.

Isn't there a chinese version of HD-dvd that is in wide use?

Yes there is. So it would be foolish to discount a variant based off of it as everything is made in China these days anyway.

Tease.

Im not shore about the 720, then ps4 will almost def (maybe an upgraded vertion of blu-ray like the new super sized disks) and nintendo will prob reach ps3/360 graphics next gen and use the 360 kind of disks.

Yeah i know my spelling sucks but im dysgraphic so live with it :3

Conegamer - I say that the PS3 will beat the DS next week in Japan  (for hardware sales) Forfeit is control over others avatar for 1 week.

Sony is not going to another disk format yet. They learned their lesson and don't want to price themselves out of the market again. 4-8 speed blu-ray drives should be cheap by the time the ps4 comes out. 50gb will still be plenty for a game next gen.

Ms will put a blu-ray drive into their system too. They don't want to miss out on people that want to watch movies on blu-ray. Maybe they'll put a cheaper download only sku on the market as well to have the cheaper console again. Arcade with wireless-n and 320gb, Elite with blu-ray and 640gb.

Maybe nintendo will come with a gamecube size blu-ray disk?

dual layerd disc for the 720 and Wii with a heavy focus on downloadable content from MS.

downloadable will be something MS will reqiure pub's to do for most of there games, and well lets face it! the MS fan's may not have a problem with it.
