Why not an industry standard format? Theres no harm in say Microsoft and Nintendo working together on a common format.

You mean like Blu-ray?  For most of the tech industry, it is the format.  I believe Apple is the only company now completely abstaining from the format.  Microsoft even supports it for Windows directly, which means they have to pay a small royalty to the BDA.

I think 720 and PS4 will use BD next gen (didn't see that as an option).  Wii will probably use a variant.

The only thing MS would have to be concerned about is the image among its fans in thinking that they are supporting a "Sony" format.  "Sony" because Panasonic actually owns more of the format than Sony.  As far as I know, MS supports DVD and CD, which Sony has some ownership of.

If anything, the PSP GO should be a lesson about discless formats.

They could easily work on a variant which has a lower royalty base and from that they could charge a fee to the end user if they want to enable regular Blu Ray format playback. That way they can turn it into a revenue source instead of another cost which adds to the fixed base cost of their machines.
