LBP2 is the only game on PS3 with potential to become a system seller, IMO.
DCU: never. who plays a comic-mmo? nerds (me included). but that won't be enough for system-selling because not much people will buy a PS3 just for this game.

must-have-list for platforms i don't own yet:
WiiU: Donkey Kong
XBone: Dead Rising 3, Ryse
| UnSub said: DCUO launched 14 Jan 2011 in Europe and it looks like day 1 sales are aboug 28k for the PS3. The US sales information will give a better picture since that will take into account a full launch week's worth of sales. SOE keeps adding servers and claims DCUO sold out, but I'm wondering if this is because they didn't send out that many / server can't handle a particularly high population. |
Remember that MMOs sell rather low. Even the hypped Warhammer Online reachead slightly above 1 milion sales and that was after a month or two

Probably not. Certainly not initially. If it was to become genuinely big - odds seem against it on console but who knows - then sure, I could see it driving console sales. But it would genuinely have to gain some serious momentum and word of mouth enough to attract new owners to the console for the MMO.
I don't mean WoW levels of big, but pretty damn big nonetheless.
Also, why is everyone quonting the montly fee - isn't there multiple options? Normally on an MMO if you're serious you don't pay monthly but subscribe for at least 6 if not 12 months which normally brings the cost down.
Not really into MMOs myself, but initial demand seems to be fine if they're having to increase server support and the general feedback seems positive - although perhaps that's just because the last MMO I was aware of was FFXIV and that couldn't really have had worse launch.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

No. Glad we had that in-depth conversation :D but realy anyone who realy wants to play it will probably just get it for PC :P but better for MMO's ^^

Just to tie in some info off DCUO's boards from their community manager:
Let me go ahead and add a few things: 1) These numbers aren't accurate. They don't take into account Digital Distribution (don't underestimate how many people went D2D and Steam) and certainly not the rest of the world some of which is just launching. 2) There is a much larger PS3 game base than PC game base. 3) We don't share specific metrics like this but I can tell you the number of people we have playing one platform don't heavily exceed the other at this point. I can't say it will stay that way forever but we are pleased with the sales on both platforms.
So it suggests to me that sales in this launch week were 300k or so across both platforms, with the PS3 outselling the PC version. The next week will also include fuller data on the European launch and launch in Oceania (where SOE is charging 33% more in terms of sub fees).
So, 290k PS3 sales in its launch month - not exactly stellar results for what is meant to be a AAA title costing US$50m.
PC sales are likely at around the same level, making overall sales a lot better, but not particularly strong on a per platform basis. And then there are the subscription issues, with SOE releasing a discounted 3 month rate to encourage players to stay longer.
I have to admit, I'm a little skeptical of digital sales being THAT strong. Not specifically for this game, but in general. For sales to be about the same across platforms, PC digital distribution sales would have to exceed PC retail sales. That seems... optimistic. Is digital distribution already that strong already? I'd love that to be the case, don't get me wrong. I knew it was on the rise, but this would be a little more than "on the rise."
I know there have been statements of the player base being roughly equal on each platform, but couldn't that instead just mean that a bunch of PS3 purchasers stopped playing it almost immediately?
