Probably a little bit more accurate to compare it to things like Wii Fit w/ Balance Board, Move, or the Guitar Hero franchise. More comparable. But I guess you could compare it to systems as well, but it's not a fair comparison for the add-on (add-on is limited to user base while a system isn't). If we look at Wii Fit after 6 weeks we get 3.6 million in sales so Kinect is outpacing it right now. Should continue to do that for awhile as Kinect launched in the holiday season and Wii Fit didn't do that aside from Japan. Software wise for those balance boards, it is hard to tell as Wii Fit series is the only that requires the balance board, but there is a lot of software that uses it. We know about Move and Kinect is far outpacing it in hardware and software, although same issue with software for Move as with the balance board. As for Guitar Hero and Rock Band like things, this is another hard one to really look at. Across many platforms, peripherals aren't required to play the games, and different games in the series when you "had" to buy the peripherals.
I mean aside from trying to get a fair comparison, it is impressive what Kinect is doing right now. Obviously supply has been something it has had over some of those compared to as Wii, PS3, Wii Fit, and the Guitar Hero/Rock Band series all suffered some pretty brutal supply constraints early. But maybe this just shows better preparedness on MS's part.
As for software wise, Kinect still has a long way to go. Seems like many people are sticking with Kinect Adventures that they got with the peripheral and either choosing Kinect Sports or Dance Central as a secondary purchase. But have yet to see really any expansion past that as possibly waiting til next year to make more purchases for it. This is unlike the Wii where although they got the Wii Sports with it as well, they were also getting Wii Play, albeit for a second control in Europe and Japan, and obviously Twilight Princess. 6 million in software in the first 6 weeks (excluding Wii Sports in Europe and America) which is pretty damn good for launch. This compared to about 3.8-4.0 million in software for Kinect (excluding Kinect Adventures). Pretty much this shows what many have stated that some people are content at just getting the peripheral and the game that comes with which might state the software isn't the greatest yet. And if they are buying a game with it, it is just one. Compared to the Wii which had early adopters buying at least 2 games when they bought it.
So what I can say is yes Kinect is quite the success so far. It has entered the market in a huge way and pushed 4 million in its first 6 weeks. With a few weeks left in the main holiday season, that number will continue to skyrocket and pass other peripherals like it such as the balance board and even system launches themselves. But, if the product wants to continue to be a success in the future, software does need to increase and more big software like Kinect Sports, Dance Central, and Kinectimals need to release. MS and third parties will have to continue to release big titles to keep it going strong. But what has been proven is it is a big force in the industry now and here to stay.
