Forums - Sales - Kinect launch success????? Some figures.

You can compare anything. I don't think Wii vs Kinect is an unfair comparision.

Wii Fit has absolutely NOTHING in common with Kinect.

Actually, they are both platform extending peripherals.  Their method of input being different aside, they are the same thing categorically.

Seems the only people in denial here are those that think Kinect is something more than a peripheral to an established console platform.

do you consider the sega 32x a peripheral?  or the sega cd?  These are often considered consoles as they had their own software lineup, but they also utilized the sega genesis hardware...  That seems to be the big difference here (to me anyway).  You don't walk into a store and see a wii fit section of games like you do with kinect (or move for that matter).

Personally I would view them as separate platforms.

Let me bold, underline and italicize the key words here.

The Wii Balance Board does have its own section at many large block retailers.  The smaller chains tend not to as it's simply not warranted with the small store footprint and smaller Balance Board library.

For those that consider the 32x or Sega CD as a seperate console, they are incorrect.  Just like Eye Toy, PSEye, Move, Wii Balance Board, Satelitview, N64 DD, Atari Jaguar CD,  Kinect, Wii Motion Plus, etc...they are platform extending peripherals or add-ons.

Wii Fit is a deadend piece of hardware with 1 piece of software.  There is no extension of the hardware because the hardware/software are mutually inclusive and exclusive of any other software.  The Wii Fit hardware is a controller...it's even worse than a nunchuck...at least a nunchuck can be used on more than 1 game.

Kinect/Move are a portals to a whole new generation of software.  They support this generation by being a platform for them.   All totalled, by the end of the 8th gen, we should see 100's of games developed only because of these new platforms.

Lets call Xbox 360 and PS3 Gen 7.5.  With Kinect and Move, let's call them Gen 8. :)

Let's call them false facts.

Wii Balance Board has 41 titles that support it and more still in development.

We'll call Wii, PS3 and X360 hardware and software generation 7.  Like it's supposed to be.

This means WIi was never in 7th gen, and from 6th went to 8th.

A perfectly logical conclusion. If motion controls are what make the 360 and PS3 move forward, then it means that the Wii was ahead of them all along.

Since 2006. To late for Xbox360 and PS3.

Wii Fit is a GAME.  Kinect is a CONSOLE EXTENSION.

Wii Fit (Balance Board) is more like Guitar Hero (Guitar) or Tony Hawk Ride (Skateboard).  Kinect is more like Sega CD or 32X.

No.  They are not the same thing.  The more people promote this, the more the mods are going to take notice and it'll hopefully get added to 'the list'.

Temper tantrums about what KINECT should be defined as aside, nobody can deny KINECT is a runaway hit and its selling good amounts of software for a recently released product.

This thread is pure gold BTW.

Kinect has been a monster this holiday season, something I wrote off myself but ended up picking one up lol... those are some impressive sales figures and yes the kinect is seen as a new hardware entry for microsoft, not an add on.  You dont pour more money into advertising for an add on than you do for the console it adds onto, and microsoft themselves confirmed that kinect would see the largest marketing push in company history.

Kinect is not an add on? News to me.

Try playing a Kinect without an Xbox 360 and get back to me.

It doesn't matter what it's "seen as." The fact is that it's an add no matter how you try to spin it, and thus shouldn't be compared to the Wii. Comparing Kinect to the balance board would be a more accurate comparison.

I wish I was as narrow minded as you, things would be much more simple.  Kinect is seen as a "platform" not necessarily a console, but not as limited as an "add-on" would suggest.  The fact that you find the kinect comparable to the balance board is indicative of the logic used to produce such a post.  However, it is obvious that people's idea of an add-on and platform differ which is why there seems to be a bit of confusion surrounding the status of the kinect.  I have never seen an "add-on"  house the variety of software that is out now and is yet to come due to the versatility it offers developers when they are designing said software.  When you have a device that is going to be supported by a continuous stream of software developed SPECIFICALLY for that device covering a broad range of genres with planned hardware updates Im not quite sure how kinect could be seen as anything other than a platform.  Hell, even littlebigplanet 2 will be considered its own platform even though it may be a piece of software it still provides the tools and functions necessary to allow those who use littlebigplanet 2 to create a broad range of experiences.

...Dude, Kinect is AN ADD ON! You cannot change this fact no matter how much you try to spin it.

Wow, this is news to me. First time I've ever seen Kinect being considered a platform.

I thought it was always labeled as an add-on :/
