Forums - Gaming - Will Nintendo Create New franchises?

I think Nintendo this gen wanted to attract new gamers with casual new IPs, and they have made many of those, while keeping their old user base with their old franchises. With Gamecube also they had the problem of low sales, so they had to mantain a conservative strategy, so they made mostly old franchises. While on GBA and N64 from what I remember there were many new quality IPs (like Golden Sun/Advanced Was on GBA, or like Paper Mario, Banjo Kazooie, Conker on N64). The 3DS looks more mainstream focused so far so I think we will see something new on it, Steel Diver looks already interesting, also Kid Icarus Uprising looks good (even if it's not formerly a new IP).

Nintendo's created a fuck load of new IPs this generation, just with the exception of Brain Training, Wii... and Nintendogs they haven't been that major and haven't seen anywhere near the success of the likes of Mario, Zelda, etc.

Off the top of my head from Nintendo first and second parties this generation:

Nintendogs

Xenoblade

Soma Bringer

Captain Rainbow

Daigasso/Jam with the Band

I want to stress that this is just off the top of my head, and there are probably more I've forgotten.  I've excluded games like Endless Ocean and Another Code, which were developed by 3rd parties.  You are factually wrong to say Nintendo 'hardly create any new IPs'.  I would prefer it if Nintendo made less IPs and focussed more attention and marketing on each one.  Nintendo is missing a major new so called 'hardcore' IPs this gen, like how they had Pikmin last gen and Pokemon and 1080 in the 5th gen.

I going to quote myself just so everyone can see my original post which shits all over the argument that Nintendo doesn't create new IPs.

And I would also like to add in Steel Diver for next generation.  It's a so called 'hardcore' new IP based around warfare.  Surely you people recognise that?

I don't think there any debate Nintendo arn't creating new IP's and whatnot, but there definitely hasn't been a new 'franchise' in the broader sense of the word. I think what people really want (Who arn't here to troll) is a new world, with new characters and a new theme and everything. A fully fleshed new IP which has some sort of story, will actually be expanded upon with sequels and release outside of Japan >_>.

I grew up on all the Nintendo games and they still have a place in my heart, but playing the new Pokemon or Metroid or Zelda just doesn't feel fresh or exciting anymore. The worlds have been exhausted, little has been done to make them feel new or fresh and I can pretty much tell what will happen in the game before I play it.  I'd love to see Nintendo try and do something different with a new world, new characters etc.

If I hadn't played them, since I don't own a Nintendo console, then they don't exist.

They can't exist if I don't know about them, right?

You know, like when I cover my eyes and don't see people around me. That means they don't see me, neither.

That don't excuse anyone to say Nintendo don't make new IP's.

I would have no problem whatsoever if the thread and op were phrased differently.  Maybe like 'Do you think that Nintendo will make a new IP which caters to the so called 'hardcore' crowd which has received similar attention to detail as the main Mario/Zelda/Pokemon etc games coupled with a substantial marketing push?'

I think the closest we are going to get this gen is The Last Story, however despite being owned, published and probably localised by Nintendo it is being developed by a 3rd party (though I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo are assisting).  As Nintendo own the rights to the game, it is technically a new IP, but I can understand if it isn't treated as such.

Here in the UK, Nintendo of Europe is also treating Prof Layton like one of their new IPs (despite being developed by Level-5 and being 3rd party in Japan), in the way it is heavily advertised and sells really well (The first game was sold out for a couple of weeks in the U.K following release, a feat that this gen has really only been otherwise achieved by Mario Kart Wii, Brain Training and the Wii's launch games).

Also thinking about it, I agree with the point brought up by Freebs2 that most of the Wii's userbase didn't own a GC and therefore is more likely to find Mario Galaxy and the like new and fresh.  This is likely to not be the case next gen with the 'Super Wii' or whatever it is called.
