Nintendo Wii May Get Voice Chat

While the Wii isn't known for its particularly awesome online scene (*cough* friend codes *cough*), Nintendo is working on improving its functionality. NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime said this morning during a conference call that while they have no interest in adding voice chat to Virtual Console titles, it could be coming to the Wii all the same.

In terms of voice chat... certainly our system has the capability for online voice chat, what it comes down to is finalizing the peripheral... I would not be surprised to see that capability come to this system.
And finalizing a peripheral shouldn't be much of a problem, because Nintendo could easily add a Bluetooth headset...since the Wiimote already utilizes the wireless standard.

COMMENT:

hmm..nothing we didn't know about already but reassuring to hear nonetheless. Right?

so very close..i want to be able to talk...but at the same time it has been nice to play ames with out allthe 12year old spamming the mic and screaming racial threats

Well any Nintendo games with voice chat will no doubt be limited to only chatting with friends. Which, actually, I'm quite content with.

all people really need is a way to mute users individually.

The way I see it, you have it set up so you can put one person at a time on perma-mute, but then you also have a temp-solo feature that lets you mute everybody BUT one person for a short time, so that you can figure out who it is that should be muted.
It should also be designed so that you can have a friends list and a mute list, so you don't have to remute them every time you play.

Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!

Currently wrapped up in: Half Life, Portal, and User Created Source Mods
Games I want: (Wii)Mario Kart, Okami, Bully, Conduit,  No More Heroes 2 (GC) Eternal Darkness, Killer7, (PS2) Ico, God of War1&2, Legacy of Kain: SR2&Defiance

My Prediction: Wii will be achieve 48% market share by the end of 2008, and will achieve 50% by the end of june of 09. Prediction Failed.

Nice to hear they haven't outright eliminated the possibility of voice chat.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Voice chat with friends = good... i would not care for anything else.

I've never played a game with voice chat, so this is not a big deal to me, but I'm very interested in trying it out. Only enabling it just with friends sounds like a good idea, considering what people say about Xbox Live.

Also agreed. I only like to talk to civilized people. Exceptions include my friends.
