Julian Assange is in the journalism business and he's a professional hacker and stuff. He would be the stupidest guy in the world if he were to rape someone. He knows how easy it is to dig for informations and he knows people are constantly after him and most likely following his very gesture. I call it fake.

Yes, because celebrities have NEVER committed crimes.  Ever.  OJ Simpson was innocent too.

What does it have to do with Julian Assange? He's no celebrity.

I would also like to point out that Assange has only really turned up in the last few weeks, so a bit late for the awards. And it is NOT a popularity contest

its not a popularity content, its about impact.  Mark Zuckerberg by far truly had no impact on the web for reasons I stated in this thread. Assange, and several others, had bigger impact.

I'm sorry for only skimming this thread, but according to your opening post it is a popularity contest... :-p

That is the funny thing isn't it?  I mean I woudln't give it to facebook either, what with Twitter surpassing it, but hey.  Facebook has been more impactful then Assange... who's leaks haven't really accomplished much yet except a couple people getting fired.

His leaks woke people up to pay attention to world politics. He accomplished awakening the public to real journalism instead of the crap you get on cable news channels.

As for the people who are laughing at Lady Gaga, sadly while I dislike her/him, it brought back the craziness of the music of the past with the wacky costumes and out-there music. While not original as it stole its look, the statement and impact on music in the last year remains the same.

People voted who they felt was most influential and had the greatest impact, hence why people like Jon Stewert and Steve Colbert is there. Their rally for sanity/fear was massive.

Er.... no he didn't.  The same people up in arms over the leaks are the same people who already knew what was going on.

John Stewart & Colbert would of been my actual vote because they're the ones who actually accomplished that, amusingly via comedy.

Er... yes he is?  You do know that Openleaks is a new website being opened by a lot of they key founders of Wikileaks specifically because they feel wikileaks has been compromised by Assange acting like a celebrity and using it to sell his beliefs, go to speaches etc.

Dude is very much a celebrity.  The alleged rapes took place at an event that was centered around him being the main speaker.

OMG!!

TIME IS BIASED!!!  They didn't name Lady Gaga or Glen Beck as POTY!!!!!

OMG!!

TIME IS BIASED!!! They didn't name *insert top 10 names here* POTY!!!

I think you can see where this is going.

All I'm saying is that the poll is not hugely important

I think the shocker out of this one is Erdogan's surprise popularity. This guy's been Turkish PM for a while now, but what did he do in 2010 to light up the charts?

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

the man is on trail for rape, do you really think a paper would risk honoring him before the verdict?

oh and i agree with bubbles initial post, wikilead is irresponsable an really oblivious of the consequences... why don't they reveal noth korea attack plans or bin ladden's position? that would actually help our world...

OoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO

Ok. For this issue we need to sort out

Does POTY represent who has had the biggest impact, the person who has had the biggest positive impact or the person whom giving the award to will have the biggest net positive effect on America

I argue it is of course the last options

1938, a time of appeasment to Adolf Hitler, giving him small concessions in order to either prevent a war, or at least delay it until the Allies were ready. Fuck lets give it to Hitler to keep him in a good mood

1939 - fuck war fuck fuck fuck we need allies how about you Stalin, you love us right?

1940 - war aint going great HOW GOOD IS CHURCHILL!!!1one

1941 - war aint going great HOW GOOD IS Rosevelt!!!1one

1942 please just lay down and dont get in our way. If we get control of the post WWII world we will give you this shiny award Mr Stalin

It is certainly not to represent people who had had a positive impact, it has been given to some pretty despicable people, even in recent years

So the POTY has always been a sham.

Who the fuck is julian assange?

I guy who leaked some US documents and other documents that nobody seemed to care about.

then went around using his newfound celebrity to have speaking engagements where he was accused of rape and molestation.

Then he released a shitloat of american cables... and everyone now thinks the rape charges which were filed BEFORE these releases were a setup for these releases even though the best things people can say about him are "He's a male chauvinest but I don't think he would rape anyone." and "He's turned wikileaks into a self promoting website not about important leaks but about himself and his own political views so we're making a new website".

Oh he's that guy. Well you can't spell Assange without Ass, so I'm glad he didn't get PoTY
