Forums - General - Bettering oneself means helping others (something to think about)

I found this article to be real good:
http://www.aharrisonbarnes.com/self-help-means-helping-others/

Speaks about how, in tough times, one needs to solve the problems of others in order to make it.  There is a line in there worth noting:
"Nothing you do in this life is all about you. Your career is not all about you. The company you work for is not all about you. Your family is not all about you. Your friends are not all about you. It is always all about the other person. Your life and the opportunities out there are so much larger and all encompassing than you."

From personal experience I find this part of your statement to be a load of garbage. That however is just my take.

As opposed to what, you curl yourself up in the ball and burrow yourself underground and don't do anything to help others?  The gist of the article is this: In tough times, there are a lot of problems.  The individual who can work to solve more of these problems for others, will be far more likely to get the resources they need than the person who is going out and only looking for themselves, to get their own needs and wants met, and do nothing to help others.

Like I said. Based on personal experience I have had some very hard times in my life and I have helped others much more than I get help back. It doesn't go both ways all the time. So like I said I think that article is a load of crap.

I'm not saying it is wrong to help others. I'm just saying I don't agree with the stated.

Well I've been volunteering at YAPS (young animal protection society) over the christmas break, and I always feel really happy after each visit. Then again, it's also quite sad when you're leaving and the puppies stare at you with their big googly eyes

If these businessmen didn't possess things others needed, and paid money for, would they have any money?

Anyhow, where does anyone conclude that I said that people shouldn't be compensated for solving the problems of others?  What I was saying is you need to think of what others need, and be able to provide them solutions to them.  If you make yourself a mark and aren't able to get compensated for things, then that is your problem, not the person taking from you.  I do exclude volunteer work from mentioning this.

Again, I stand by the comment that the world doesn't exist for an individual, and people doing things are done because others want and need them, and if you want something from someone, you need to offer something back.  That is the point of the article and what i have said.

The opposite of what I was talking about here would be that people who only think about themselves and don't see the needs of others, and don't provide for them, will get everything the want in the world.  Anyone here believe that is true?
