Parasite Eve 1 was "alright." I didn't find it to be special, though that may be because I played it in 2010.
I will be buying The 3rd Birthday though.

*urge to kill rising*....
j/k
It's normal to feel like that, the game and it's mechanics, if only played for the first time in recent days, would feel quite outdated. Though back in the days it was pretty amazing, plus the story (if you know the backstory from Hideaki Sena's novel) is also superbly done.
Also, I don't know if you noticed that, but the system in PE was the precursor of Vagrant Story's system and it was one of the first free-moving combat systems that Squaresoft implemented into it's JRPG games. It's kinda of a shame that they didn't evolve it for PE2 and instead, went with the Resident Evil-esque scheme ._.

If you have the time and disposition, I suggest you (and encourage) to try the EX Mode.
The real boss of the game is found on the Chrysler Tower, which is unlocked after Day 2 in EX Mode, though it's only recommended to tackle it after defeating the T-Rex in Day 5.
The problem is, it's comprised of 77 randomly generated levels, which all look the same in visual terms (different layouts though), so it can become quite a bore, but also has both the toughest boss encounters in the game (there's one for each 10 levels that you go up, afterwards you get a key that allows you to skip from the bottom floor to the last boss that you fought floor) and hardest normal enemies in the game.

Is this game even a RPG any more?, if it is not, I don't want. Looks like a generic action game.
