Forums - Sales - After NPD PS3 gets some nice promotions.

Looks like Sony is now getting desperate once again since Move failed to be as appealing as Kinect.

How are they getting desperate?  Walmart if offering a 50 dollar GC with the Wii from the 5th to 11th and a 75 dollar GC on 250 GB 360 on the 12th to the 18th. By your logic all 3 console makers are getting "desperate"  or maybe....just maybe it's the holidays...and retailers are offering promotions to make money?

If this doesn't help then, in 2011, Americas is gonna be a 2 console market again, like Japan.

lol no. PS3 would have to sell Japan 360 sales next year to have that and we all know that isn't happening.

With this promotion the PS3 will hopefully only get outsold by 500,000-800,000 consoles instead of 1-1.2 million in December.

You see, I'm talking market share, not numbers. The PS3 isn't doing better in US than the 360 in Japan if it does 500k whilst 360 does 100k in Japan; its competitors are still tied at ten times its sales.

Oh, and I'm obviously not thinking that PS3 will do that terribly (not even close, xD) in US, just not high enough to be comparable to the Wii and 360.

PS3 US market share: 20.8%

360 Japan market share: 7.8%

That market share is excluding portables right?

I've seen a marketshare graf including all consoles (even those filthy home consoles that don't deserve to be called consoles because they're not portables) and 360 was really low. Can't recall it, but something like 3%...

Sweet. It's about time! haha. I was just wondering why it seemed like Walmart always did it for 360 but not ps3. Anyways, who takes the hit of that $100 gift card (or $75)? Is it all WalMart/Amazon? Or is Sony taking that money out of their profit? Or both? I don't see how it could be all WalMart/Amazon bc there's no way they even make $75 or $100 on each ps3 sold...

Anyone know?

If I were to guess, it's a cross-promotion between the store and Sony. The margin on the PS3 for retail is, well, bad. (Last wholesale I'd heard was $290 for the $299.99 model.) Sony helps to move more PS3s, and the stores, by giving a temporary loss in a giftcard, can move closer to break-even when it is used. However, I can't see either store taking the full hit, due to the excessive red ink that would be incurred.

This is probably correct. In my past experience when I used to work in retail, price offs/ bundles/ giftcards were all shouldered by the supplier/ distributor. In this case, I'm pretty sure Sony would be shouldering the cost of all the giftcards that would be given out.

In a way, this is a double edge sword for Sony. If it moves a lot of PS3s, this would increase their marketshare and a potential of additional profit in software in the long run but they would be losing $100 now or on the day of the offer on every PS3 that the retailer sells.

OT Sounds like a great deal and should give a nice boost to PS3 sales that week.

every console/handheld will have nice boost this week, even PSP

I just looked through those catalog things and I saw this:

Huge PS3 promotions, with wii being advertiszed like crazy. Even in Kmart with that huge Kinect push I didn't see a 360 ad.

Look at the game sales for Move..it is pretty awful. I would say Move is at the least a sales disappointment for Sony. Week to week not many Move units are actually being sold through to consumers (about 150k per week worldwide which is pretty horrible with it being at the height of the Holiday sales right now). Compare that to weekly worldwide sales of 680k in just the last week for Kinect.

This was supposed to be a response to another post but I guess I didn't quote it correctly.
