Forums - General - IMDB and Tyler Perry what the hell

This might sound random but

I'm not a movie critic but I like his movies.

I find them inspiring with redemption, positive influences, good music, and good humor

I know the movies are not considered the pinnacle of movie making but why are his movies rated so low.

I can do bad all by myself-2.8? Good movie

Diary of a mad black women-4.9

Madea goes to jail-3.3

I never have called something as racist but this appears to be.

Yeah, I never trust IMDB for movie ratings. Most people vote either a 1 or a 10 and most movies get hundreds of votes before they're even released!

I think Tyler Perry makes good movies. They definitely deserve higher scores than that :l

I'm black and I found the movies to be funny but pretty damn bad.  Tyler knows his audience but he directs movies horribly.  He has a way to go.  I loved the plays, too.  I even told my GF when she wanted to see "For Colored Girls" on her birthday, "I expect this movie to be terrible."

We didn't see it.  I'll get her the unofficial DVD.

His movies are alright but he reuses too much of his previous content in his movies and TV shows. Meet the browns is HORRIBLE by the way (TV series and Movie).

There always seems to be a mother who is on crack and her family is struggling to get by without her.

I love the redemption of the troubled characters.

And I liked the songs in 'do bad all by myself"

Back when I was younger, we had movies like "The Best Man", "Soul Food", "Malcolm X", and "Boyz in the Hood".  These were black movies with strong directors, high production values, and powerful messages.  The state of black cinema today is a little depressing.  We don't have Spike Lee, the Hughes Brothers, Mario Van Peebles, or anyone of that caliber.  We have Tyler Perry.  Piss poor acting, embarrassing comedy, disjointed story telling, and forced messages.  I like SOME of the movies and I loved them as plays (espescially "I can Do Bad"...) but goddam.  How did we fall so far so fast?

Go watch New Jersey Drive, Menace II Society, Color Purple (Spielber directed), or Rosewood.  Then tell me Tyler Perry is deserving of higher reviews.  Sorry.  I'm just frustrated.  Even Ice Cube's comedies rank higher, to me.

^^^And how did I forget "Set it Off"!!  Where are my powerful black movies!?

I know those movies in your post are good but 2.8?  The movie is not that bad.

I also love the so call blaxpoitation movies like super fly and Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.

But Tyler Perry's movies put me in a good damn mood

I saw my first Tyler Perry movie last weekend, Madea goes to jail.

I really really REALLY enjoyed the hell out it.

You should also never trust reviews to begin with because those critics have preferences which may be entirely opposite to your own, which IMO makes them completely useless. For example my favorite genre (Slasher Films) almost ALWAYS get super low scores, yet I love them. Same happens with low budget Zombie movies which I love.

Who cares what they think?

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Yeah.  Perry's movies are REALLY good when you watch them with an audience that gets him and his style.  And like I said, I'm surprised "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" got such a low score since I really enjoyed it.  But watching them by myself, it's hard to take them seriously.  I liked a lot of the older films like Superfly, Shaft, and The Mack, too.  They were just so damned cool.  I probably wouldn't like them as much, now.  Stll, as a kid, I wanted to be Shaft so badly!

I guess, like any review, you have to take the reviewer into account.  If they aren't the intended audience, how can you relate to their review?  I'm not forgiving Perry's work.  i'm just saying that they have their audience--and to them (not me, unfortunately), the movies are just fine.  They make a lot of money for a reason.
