Forums - PC - I need some PC upgrading help...

1) My PC is a Dell Inspiron 530S (quite old I know) With:

Windows Vista 32bit

Intel Core Duo E4500 @ 2.20GHz

2.00 GB RAM

2) I am looking to upgrade my PC to play fairly decent games, (DOOM 3, TF 2 etc). My friend suggested I get this graphics card: http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-512MB-Silent-PCI-1600MHz/dp/B001UNI9JK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I checked 'Can I Run It' and I think it should be OK, as all other aspects of my PC are fine when it comes to those games.

But I'm no PC expert and would like some advice on what to do. I'm not looking at playing really high end games, and have a fairly low budget.

Thanks

I play PC and PS3. The best of both worlds.

That video card on your current setup would run even the latest games fine, once you don't up the graphics to the max. You should check what the reviews say about actually fitting it into the slot though, it seems it's big enough to block out other slots as well..

That is a terrible card; though I will admit very cheap. It would prevent you playing anything more recent than TF2 well, and even TF2 might not have high settings.

It would play the games you want, but I'm not happy with recommending it.

Could you recommend a different card? Or type of card?

One word: budget, as in how much do you have to spend.

That will give you the neighborhood to look in, whether it's up to $50 US, $50-100, etc.

Since it's the holidays, then you can start looking for the best available deals since what is typically the best deal in general, may not be the best deal on a given day once you see what's on sale.

For under $50, HD4650 gets Tom's Hardware November pick.

My budget is £50 ($80) and I was told that I would need a 'slim' or smaller graphics card for my pc. Whatever that means..

"slim" means single slot card.

For $80, HD5670.

I would strongly suggest something like this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-120-HT

An HD 5670 for 60 pounds. You can probably find it cheaper on a price search engine. It'll play all modern games and make your PC compatible with practically everything.

Edit: Is your case thin? What they might be saying is that you need a 'low profile card'. So maybe the 5670 isn't appropriate.

Tease.
