i never understand why move controler needed the wierd looking ball end part? was it suppose to look like an icecream cone to attrct the kiddies? couldnt they have not made it look so odd?

because the glowing sphere is very easy to track in 3d, and the algorithm required to do so is not very complex or taxing upon the system, that is why when combined with the gyros and accelerometers and magnetometers move is such a really precise and impressive piece of technology, fact is you forget about the sphere (if you hated it) and grow to love it when you are playing games, just from the immersion you get

Could have easily been done with IR and those glowing stupid balls would not have to be there

even tracking a controller is not efficient as tracking a sphere, if you ever programmed you would know this, even if you used ir to track your controller it still would not be as fast or as precise as move, each system has it's benefits kinect can do full body tracking(3d) and casual games, move can do full body tracking (if needed in 2d), and all kinds of games....

My point is the sphere does not need to be visable with the human eye.  IR could have been used. Cameras can pick up IR just as easily as visible light.

the problem with ir is you cannot tell exactly where you are in 3d space, which is why you can get away with allsorts on wii, if move used ir it would be exactly like wii, which would make you lot happy i guess, so keep on dreaming

here is my simple noob guide:-

a sphere is a certain size right, ok so from its size and it's calibration angle we can tell how far away it is and more important it's x,y an z co-ordinates are really precise

I love how you treat me like an idiot. Again the sphere could have been lit with IR light. It does not have to be blue or red or any color that is visable to the human eye.  As long as the camera can see the light it can track the sphere.

THAT STILL MEANS IT HAS A STUPID GLOWING BALL ON TOP you are just being silly now, the glowing colour is useful and it actually has a purpose outside of tracking as well, if you are going to use ir why have a ball at all, the colour often prompts the user as to certain actions for example a correct action over a bad one.

Ps i am not saying you are an idiot, but some of your ideas are a bit silly

Sorry folks. Sony dropped the ball and put it on a controller. Kinect works great for me and anyone I've had over to try it thinks it's amazing and they want to purchase it. It will change the game. Next year at this time, let's discuss just how much the gaming landscape has changed because of Kinect.

Let's see:

  • Should Kinect fail miserably, Sony's words will seem strangely prescient.
  • Should Kinect go on to massive success, then clearly Sony didn't have the forsight to see the true potential.

Guessing at which is true RIGHT now, seems a bit self-serving for fans from all sides, I think.

i do find the glowing ball is a bit distracting at night. and i don't wanna my 1 year old staring at it either. it's a bit too bright. i wish it had the option to adjust brightness. :(

Define hardcore? Because I think the term has been transformed over the past few years to entail gamers who only play M rated games with plenty of violence.

Hardcore to me is a person who loves video games and playing them. The genre doesn't matter. Of course we all like depth to our experience if we are hardcore. Here's an example:

A wonderful moment in table tennis in Kinect Sports was when I stepped back to play away from the table hitting the ball to my online opponent. After 2-3 times of this, setting a somewhat slower pace of the ball being returned to my opponent, I stepped towards the table as close as possible and then hit the ball had. The result was a return that went to my opponent at a faster pace than they were expecting and giving them no time to react to hit the ball.

Don't get me wrong; I'm sure Move is good fun. But having no controller in your hand is a freeing and liberating experience. And I am completely enjoying this new way to play.

sorry dude i did the whole controlerless thing with eyetoy and trust me kinect does not offer anything new over eyetoy yet, but with the hardcore apps coming out hopefully that will change, but the hardcore apps will require a controller defeating ms slogan "you are the controller".

Say whatever you want, but your definition of "hardcore" and many others over the past few years is flawed. The term has been twisted into meaning gamers who play only a particular genre. It would be like having a "hardcore" movie watcher who only sees action flicks. It's time for true hardcore gamers to take the word and its meaning back: someone who loves video games, plays them, lives them, breathes them!

Basically, it sounds like Sony wasn't willing to pay to solve the software challenges.  They really can't compete with the amount resources that MS can afford to throw at the software research side to support Kinect.  Plus, Kinect fits with MS' whole natural user interface play.   So just like Sony got extra benefit from using bluray, MS will get extra benefit from kinect.

If you read the article it seems pretty clear that 3D cameras don't really have any extra benefit for gaming, other then the initial wow factor anyways, I'd go so far to say that MS fell for the wow factor themselves and realized too late (if at all) that it isn't going to work like they thought, I think MS thought about marketing while pursuing kinect and kinda forgot about the fact the technology has to work

You are making my point for me.  Sony can't or won't make it work.  MS can through software.  Also, the article was mistaken about the resolution of the camera.  It is not 320x240, it is 640x480 as can be seen from the PC hacks.  Kinect currently only uses lower resolution, but there is no reason it can use the higher resolution.

If it could why aren't they and I'm pretty sure a tech guy would know what tech is in kinect, and NO MS CAN'T make it work, they haven't and they won't they are just making people like you think they can to get sales before you people finally see the obvious truth, MS is hiding the faults of the hardware with software but they can't do that for every game, every game is on rails or you don't move in a 3D plane all you are going to get is more of the same crap that was on launch

Of course MS can make it work.  It is a software problem which is what MS is good at.  It is working great now and will only get better over time.

Other companies already solved the problems and it's still limited as hell, you simply can't use a camera alone to move through a 3d plane and control other actions, on rails, flailing arms and side to side are the only games that are playable on kinect
