I'm primarily a classical pianist, but I also played in bands.
I mostly play stuff like Chopin (his mazurkas, waltzes and nocturnes), Mendelssohn (Songs without Words), Gershwin, and a bunch of other stuff. I have played a few duets and solos for crowds in the 1.5-3k range granted they were crowds of opportunity rather than coming specifically to see me
. I've done duets with vocals, violin and flute. I have to say that doing a classical instrumental duet is way more challenging than any other kind of performance.
The only paying gig I ever did was a graduation party where I pocketed $50 for maybe 20 minutes of play time (the band leader decided he wanted to do a solo session
). I also played as an opener to Rebeca St. James for a moderately sized crowd. I guess I got paid in food and free tickets for family members for that one
.
I can also play guitar/bass and anything with a keyboard (granted, I'm not great at rock organ style of play or jazz), but I'm only great at piano. I really should pull my guitar out and get back into that, and then I need to get a drum kit and learn drums as I've always wanted to.
EDIT: I have recordings from my duets but they are on cassette, so I'll never have them digitized
