There is no score

========================

All this demonstrates Polyphony’s time since Gran Turismo 4 has, on the whole, been well spent.  There’s a massive amount to see and do, some features we’ve not seen before (the mid-race day/night transitions are beautiful) and the insane amount of detail on the Premium cars will ensure that the game’s Photo Mode will find favour with photography enthusiasts just as much as it would with motorsport fans – GT5 is capable of some amazing looking real-time shots, some of which are dotted about this article and are untouched, straight from the game.

So, gran Turismo 5: finished, complete, perfect.  Right?

No, not quite, but it’s pretty damned near close.  Gran Turismo 5 is essential gaming for race sim fans, something that will grow with you the more you play.  Sure, there’s some visual issues here and there and the game’s UI is fussier than it needs to be, but as a racing game, which is presumably the reason everyone’s buying the game for, it’s unmatched, unrivalled and as comprehensive as you could have ever hoped for.  It’s unfair to score the game at this point, though, we’re barely a quarter of the way through A-Spec and less through B and it has continued to get better every step of the way.

But it doesn’t matter anyway – just go and buy it.

I beg you people to read the entire review at the link below. TheSixthAxis is definitely far more creditable and publish unbiased accurate reviews. Just read the whole thing.

Says who?  That just sounds like... this review is positive therefore its accurate.

You cant pick and choose and really it doesnt matter that some reviews are lower than expected.  Just get the game and be happy.

There is no conspiracy, its all becoming a bit paranoid.

Yes, there are. A lot of reviews without online mode and just some hours of play? Sorry but the actual review system is broken... not for GT5 but for all game on the market.

IMO.

My only criticism at this point is them not handing out lower scores more frequently, to help separate high ranked games from one another.  We're at the point where if a game rates below 70 on Metacritic, then it's seriously flawed and may even suck for some - when 70 "should" represent an alright game (which now, sits at low 80's rated games). Where as movies that rate in the 60's are considered positive reviews!

Now, while I do agree with there being flaws, I do not believe reviewers are stupid and do not represent a good benchmark for taste, because they do.  I do on occasion find myself disagreeing with reviewers on some games - but not many.  That's for your better judgment to decide, just like every other industry.  I feel the scores just need to be scaled properly - and I feel they've felt enough heat for the GTA4 fiasco to make that mistake again.

You cant pick and choose and really it doesnt matter that some reviews are lower than expected.  Just get the game and be happy.

There is no conspiracy, its all becoming a bit paranoid.

They haven't been slammed once for their reviews.

No I did not deliberately post this review here because it's generally positive and therefore must be a good review. I've been following TSA for a long time now and their reviews have always been accurate when it comes to desricbing what aspects of the game does work and doesn't work and you probably won't believe it unless you've read a good number of their reviews. Unbiased and accurate as ever. I noticed that not many here at VGC follow TSA like me so when I say they're creditable, it may sound doubtful but there isn't a reason to doubt me. I wouldn't go about trying to damage control by posting a good review or try to defend GT5 to extreme.

I posted this to let people know that attaching a score to a review doesn't mean shit and that you should read them and see what is great about the game and what isn't. I read reviews to see how the game is and just to see what those people loved and didn't like about that game and to see whether I could see/experience the same as well.

And please don't thinkg that I'm butthurt or paranoid about 8s and 8.5s because for all I care I'm gonna enjoy GT5 regardless of what score is given. I've been saying this for a long time now and so has others. Reviews aren't going to change my plans of getting GT5 this weekend.

I dont see the point thats all.  You are going to buy the game regardless and so am I.  What are you trying to achieve?

It will get some great scores, some good scores and a few ok scores.  Thats how it works.

These guys give Forza 3 10/10... thats bollocks.  Forza 3 doesnt deserve 10/10.  So why should I trust them more than anyone else?

Because once again the scores don't matter. I told you I read the reviews to see how good the game can be. Them giving Forza 3 a 10/10 doesn't mean it's a perfect game and it wouldn't matter whether it got a 9 or a 10 from them. All I'm interested in is what they thought of the game.

But I'm not saying TSA is the most unbiased, etc whatnot. I'm just saying they're a good read when it comes to reviews. Other review sites I read frequently are Joystiq, Eurogamer and here, VGC because from what I read from time to time, they usually good, informative reviews. Sometimes I may not agree with what they wrote because just because they saw one aspect of a game not good enough, doesn't mean I find it not good enough as well.

Another example, TSA gave God of War III a 9 and gave GOW Collection a 10/10 because the reviewer thought GOW I and II were better than III. Well that's good for them because for all I care, their review of GOW III was very solid and mostly reflected my views on GOW III except for the fact that I found GOW III the best out of the trilogy.

I certainly didn't hope to achieve anything from this other than for people to have a read of it.

And remember I never said trust these guys over all others. Just that people should have a full read of this review and just to see that scores from one person doesn't matter. Just read. There's something to take out from that review, meaning some good info to take in.

They throw high scores around... Forza 3:   10/10

It's not a conspiracy but the state of video game journalism can be considerred a joke at best. For an industry that's trying to grow out of the sterotypes of society, the industry journalists are doing a piss poor job. The early reviews (both good and bad) obviously haven't had a significant amount of time to test all the features appropriately, especially when the online mode was only recently unlocked. It destroys credibility.

When a film is reviewed you expect the reviewer to watch the entirety of the film before passing judgement. This may not be possible with games, but they need to test all the features of a game for a significant amount of time.

GT5 isn't the only game to suffer from this. I've read dev complaints about reviews that didn't even touch on co-op & multiplayer modes and one review for FFVII: Crisis core that was included in metacritic played the game for barely more than an hour and with no sound before passing judgement.

I think you need to do a little self-reflection right here.  It is we, as hardcore gamers, that need to understand what these reviews are all about.  They review the game as it is right out of the box, get in and play.  You're making th assumption that the majority of gamers in the world, will have a good chunk of time to sit down with a game and scour its features.  This is a gross misjudgment, as the realm of casual gaming is getting larger everyday.

I feel the out-of-the-box first impression reviews are legitimate to make, especially to a person who doesn't plant themselves in front of a game for hours at a time.  Sure, plenty of people do in fact do this, but now - there are an increasing amount of gamers that don't.

So don't hate on them too much, they're trying to cater to two crowds at once, all while trying to get reviews to gamers as soon as possible - before the game is out too long.

I don't think that matters as much as you think. The first impressions need to be taken note of and if negative will likely bring down the overall score of the game and tone of the review. However, to not test and review all the features results in a poor review as your not reviewing the product fully so you can't make an informed commentary even to the casual gamers.

How can you recommend or review a game to people (including casual gamers) when you're ignorant of half of the games' content? The only way to cater to everyone is to test out all features and explain what works, what doesn't and the impressions of the game from beginning to end. To do otherwise shows a lack of journalistic integrity and presents misinformation and half-truths to the reader.
