What if consoles were updated once or twice a year, would you still buy?

Yes Wii V 4.0, X-Box 1080, PS3 V 5! Gotta buy 3 5.36%

Screw that I don't want ... 53 94.64%

Total:56

So my question is? What if every year consoles got upgraded every year, new formats possible , new graphics chips, new controllers. Is that what you'd want? Or do you like the five year life cycle?

I was just chatting in another thread about why I love consoles compared to PC's or other devices. A major reason I cited was that consoles only upgrade every five years. Now I'm not talking new slimmer models with better lighting and storage capacity. I'm talking new hardware that you need to experiance the latest games.

A reason I stopped PC gaming was I had to spend like 200-400$ every year or two upgrading my PC so it could play the latest AOE and StarWars game. I upgraded constantly and have gone through like 5 PC's in 15 years when I was a PC gamer. Finally since I already owned Nintendo systems I decided to forget PC and game on consoles instead.

But someone pointed out in other industries like the I-Pad and cell phone market companies need to release entirely new devices every year. Others talk about how you need to create new graphics engines constantly to keep up with the times and play new games.

What if you needed the latest Wii to play the new Wii games? Or the latest PS3 revision to play a PS3 game or the newest X-Box 1080 running Live version 4.0. Would you actually like that?

this is why people don't like PC gaming

the title should be consoles vs PC

I could have done that, but that wasn't my intent. I wanted to see if gamers would be willing to upgrade their consoles every year like Apple fans and PC gamers and cell phone users are doing. Not just comparing PC to console gaming.

You already answered your own question with "What if you needed the latest Wii to play the new Wii games? Or the latest PS3 revision to play a PS3 game or the newest X-Box 1080 running Live version 4.0. Would you actually like that?"  Who the fuck wants to upgrade that much?  That would leave some users stranded and not able to play the latest game that came out for the same system.  Why buy a home console system that is supposed to play whatever comes out for it but in actuality doesn't.  The reasons why home console system thrived more than PC gaming was because you didn't have to worry about upgrading to play the recent games.  You put the game in and it plays.  Same can't be said about PC.   PC gaming you don't have to update every year or two but of course it does help to play the latest most demanding game.   It is obvious why  consoles thrive more than PC gaming for reasons already listed.

how could this be possible?

unless they do an apple and do small changes but really devolopers would have to pick an console and make an game for it. There is no way this can work.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

It works on PC why wouldn't it be possible on home consoles? And yes they could pull an Apple or even a Windows. We already saw it abit with the N64, which got the special expansion pack to upgrade visuals. What if Microsoft Sony and Nintendo started releasing new hardware each year like Apple does or many PC companies do.

If you needed Wii 3.0 to play the latest Mario Game? As for developers picking a console. Until piracy made the PC undesirable the developers were constantly upgrading and launching games for newer graphics cards OS's etc...etc... Even look at Crysis as the perfect example or StarCraft II etc...etc...

It is fully logical that this could happen in the console realm.

If that would happen consoles would lose one of their main advantages (if not their biggest advantage) overt PCs. And considering that PCs have more uses other than gaming, consoles would be screwed!!!

I hear the PS3 is quite popular and that system gets 12 updates in a year at least.

Tease.

Unless they cost 50$ no.
