This would make one cheap Xbox 360 if it is accurate.

That said, I would hope Microsoft could obtain a very cheap mass-market price solely on the 45nm process, let-alone the 32nm one.

Anyway IBM also makes CELL CPUs (off their East Fishkill, N.Y. facility). Actually they make the 65ns CELL that is inside the 40Gb PS3.

Assuming this is and upgrade to their East Fishkill facility (the most advanced IBM facility) then Sony could take advantage of this too since they sold their share on the 90ns CELL plant to Toshiba ;)

They will use the 32nm in the Xbox 720. Trust me.

Yes, they're in the process of moving to ever smaller and smaller chips. Technology improves every gen, and the costs of production get smaller. That's why you can buy a PS2 for 120€ nowadays, even though they were initially 300€ and still sold at a loss.

Why are you making such a big deal out of this?

32nm second half 2009 .. so no way xbox360 going to use 32nm.

Presumably in 2H 2009 the 360 will be selling a bit better than it did this year making it one of the most attractive places to apply your top fabrication process.  IBM does fabricate a lot of chips, but ~10 million/year is nothing to sneeze at.

However, moving to a 32nm chip isn't going to drop the cost of the 360 by $50 or anything like that.  It's a smaller decrease, and if you want to move to it early it is offset by the cost of rennovating a fab facility.

 Will be availible in 2009, second half of 2009. At least thats what the article says. So I also say it is not the biggest news, 45nm in 2008 32 nm in 2009. Just the normal way, but it is nice that it gets noted once in a while.

Hmmm isn't it Moore's law that says chips get half size every 18 months.

90 nm = 8100 nm^2

65 nm = 4225 nm^2 Mid-07

45 nm = 2025 nm^2 Mid-08

32 nm = 1024 nm^2 End-09

It is not Microsoft that has come up with this, it is merely a copy of the announcement that IBM plans to finalise its 32nm node technology in 2H 2009. This at least means that all major semiconductor manufacturers (Intel, AMD, IBM) will be on the same node at the same time.
