Forums - PC - Can I run the Orange Box

That 6150 won't run it at all. Unless you consider 9 FPS running it. If you are looking for a budget card, the best card for the money is right here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130085

High performance, DX10 compatible, will run every game out right now on max or near max settings except Crysis which it can run at ~ 65 FPS on Medium. For a budget card it's an amazing deal. Probably the best performance per price I've ever gotten out of a graphics card.

Try this link: Game-o-meter

Click "Start", run the test. What does it tell you?

I have a laptop, whihc has a video card that is supposed to have 559MB shared video memory, but the test says i only have 64. Admittedly, i'm running another game (Theif) in the background, would that cause issues?

I've been seriously considering buying Portal, not the rest fo teh orange box, which is why I ask.

Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!

Currently wrapped up in: Half Life, Portal, and User Created Source Mods
Games I want: (Wii)Mario Kart, Okami, Bully, Conduit,  No More Heroes 2 (GC) Eternal Darkness, Killer7, (PS2) Ico, God of War1&2, Legacy of Kain: SR2&Defiance

My Prediction: Wii will be achieve 48% market share by the end of 2008, and will achieve 50% by the end of june of 09. Prediction Failed.

I was wondering about your system RAM, but then saw you have integrated graphics :D

Just get a graphics card, anything from the series 8 of nVidia should be fine. 8600 GT should be good. Even less.

Am I the only one here who thinks you'll have no problem at all running it?

The Source engine is AMAZINGLY scalable, and if I could play HL2 on an old FX5200 with a 1.8ghz celeron on highest possible settings in DX8 mode, I know you can get away with it absolutely fine. Alot of people forget the difference that simply switching to DX8 mode can make, and while you do lose some DX9 flair, it's the performance that should matter more to you.

Try out the HL2 demo anyway, if that runs well, I guarantee for the most part all of Orange Box will run just as well.

^Episode Two is heavier than the original Half Life 2.

Very true but I'd imagine alot of the new visual features brought in with the new engine upgrade for Episode 2 were DX9 only. I can't provide any solid info on that but I reckon it's a good guess.

In DX8 mode, I don't see it being any different to Episode 1 or HL2.

EDIT: Just remembered as well, if you fancy killing it even more lol, theres actually DX7 mode too :P If Orange Box doesn't work flawlessly on that - NOTHING WILL!

Well since I'm the only one here who has actually tried to run Orange Box on a 6150SE I reserve the right to completely discredit everything in here. I tried switching it to DX8, and although that let me run HL2, Portal, and HL2 Ep 1, HL Ep2 and TF2 were still near unplayable. I had to lower the resolution way down on TF2 PLUS switch it to DX8 PLUS use a couple other tricks to play it at 25 FPS on lowest settings. Ep2 is even worse. Just trust me that it's really not worth it. Even if you get it into a playable range your resolution will be so low and your framerate will suck so much that you'll still get slaughtered. Just buy a budget card.

Well that sucks to hear nazatips :\

Any word on how DX7 mode works on this 6150SE?

Why don't you get an 8400GS? It's like only 40$ and i can play Half-Life and Ep1 (haven't tried Ep2) on 1024*768 with high settings. It really is not worth it to play a game on lowest settings, trust me i tired that with Crysis.

I can't say I actually tried DX7 mode :X

but would you really want to run it in DX7?  I can't imagine what that would do to the graphics...
