He just adopted the input device to be used as a low res 3D scanner.

Don't get me wrong, I was very impressed, particularly because the device has only been available for about two weeks, but the only thing new here is that an off the shelf consumer camera can be used as a really inexpensive 3D scanner. Typically, the affordable ones run around $3,000.  Of course they are high res, high precision and create high poly count models, but that's like comparing a web cam to a professional DSLR.

The on the fly rendering is equally impressive. It instantly had me wondering how long it will take someone to set up an array of cameras to produce live scans in 360 degrees.

That's cool stuff but the video quality he's getting out of his hack is so bad that it hurts.

If this guy had another camera on the other side he could create is entire room in 3D.
