Forums - Sales Discussion - Do you guys know the main reason why "Americas" is the biggest in sales

It may seem that way because most games are made for American gamers, therefore they sell better in America

i know this is "Cool Story Bro" material , and probably some people know it already, but....

Lots of people around here have the wrong idea that "Americas" (thats the whole region not only US btw) , sells a lot because everyone is a huge gamer in the US and everyone buys millions of copies of every game that exists.

The fact is, everywhere outside of the "officially supported" countries (Japan, USA, UK) imports their games, most imports come from the US, thus counting them as sales in the "Americas" region , its also true for Consoles, its also the reason why tracking sales is a hard thing to do, you never know that this is actually an import or it isn't and you never know what is the "official" shops in every region , or the shops that import games, but my point is, the sales of Americas is the mass of every console that is imported in every other country , sure there is a lot of imports coming from UK or Japan, but the ones coming from US are about 5 times more, and thanks to 360 and Wii being region locked , all imports are coming from US now.

Tracking sales from all regions is an impossible job, unless the big companies decide to officially ship their products to those unsupported countries, we won't have this issue of not selling as much as "Americas"

You do realise US games and consoles don't even workin many foreign countries? UK/Aus/Japan all use PAL and differing power supplies. you can't import the consoles without having additional hardware at home to run them and the games require you to have the US console (at least for the Xbox). Besides which the US is not even the cheapest place to buy from, people tend to import from the UK or Asia depending on region.

yes i do realize that, infact i have one of those adaptors i mentioned myself

Everyone buys those in order to play, also US games are indeed cheaper to get, as noted Cougarman

i don't think Call of Duty is the best selling game in the UK of all time for being a UK game

Are web sales tracked? I thought online sales were not tracked so these imports would not get counted.

They're not bought online, they get "Shipped" unofficially , foreign companies buy them from the publishers and sell them to their countries at higher costs, they don't count as shipped but count as bought

publisher don't publish them outside of their publishing areas so they sell them to those companies in order to "Release" the games outside of their publishing region.

For example Nintendo of America publishes Mario in america only, so these small foreign companies buy a large number of Marios and then ship them to their home country, and make the price much higher to gain profit, this way these sales are going to count as sales for "america" not for that other country, because its not an official shipping.

So these are not tracked by any sales tracking agencies, you will only see them reflected in shipped numbers, right?

they're reflected in sales, but the sales of america only

For EU there's no point in getting games from USA unless game isn't releasing in PAL territories because prices in UK are unbeatable.

UK prices are great, but there is at least one reason to buy from US: Different release dates. Take Kirby's Epic Yarn for example, in the US it was released already a month ago, the European/UK release date however is still months away. Since Europe release dates are often weeks, months or even years after the other regions, many people don't want to wait and simply get the already released US version. They can't understand the japanese version and they would probably prefer the multilingual european version, but playing the game in english is okay for them.

I think the main reason is just that there are more people, and the games are cheaper.

umm US has 300 million people and alot of people like buying games.

And thats not the case since its cheaper to import from UK or Hong Kong here in AUS for games.
