It could always be an automated message. If you chose to ban the person the site could send an automatic message to the person who reported it. The mod himself wouldn't have to do it.
The only problem I see with it is that only the original poster would get a message back saying that something was done. All others would get the "this post was inside the rules" or whatever post.
I'd be happier with some kind of feedback from the report box. Instead of disappearing right after you report something maybe a "A mod will respond shortly" message. I'm not sure if my reports go through or not since there isn't any feedback
