That's not what I meant. They clearly spent a lot of development time and effort making the game accessible so it would sell more. Read the Iwata Asks and pre-release Miyamoto interviews. By that I mean add Super Guide, include more 2D sections, give more help with controls, the included DVD in the box, and generally more help in levels via info signs. One of the stated purposes of SMG2 was to make people new to 3D Mario buy the game.
As it happens I do think SMG > SMG2 but not because of the above features - I preferred the music and level design of the first. I would say that Nintendo's experiment with putting that effort into mass appeal did not produce the desired sales figures or hardware momentum.
