Forums - Microsoft - A look at what Kinect's IR beam does using Nightvision Goggles!

Heh, thats pretty insane. Thats a TON of dots to be coming out of one beam.

Night goggles party. You don't need a disco ball, only kinect.

I love learning random crap that I'll never use.

I would not have expected to see dots. Pretty cool little video. I wish I knew why they were dots and how it is used with Kinect. Does anyone here know?

Yes

Wow thats pretty cool!  What do all those dots do?

I'm pretty sure that they callabrate the distance between adjacent dots, then detect movement on a 3d plane based on the distance change from the dots. But that is just my idea, I have no clue if thats true.

Sounds feasible to me!

Very cool dots!  I think it would be actually useful to have an option on set up to see the dots.  So you could figure out exactly your place space and adjust accordingly.

So you could see - hey, I could move it a little to the right, or some tall people having trouble getting seen by Kinect could see their play range.

Zappykins

PS I still think it should be called KinX.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Tell me a funny joke!

Sensible. When I read somewhere else that it projected a pattern, I expected a sort of grid, but their R&D must have obviously found that a less regular dot pattern could give more advantages for their purposes, and most probably also help avoiding possible aliasing when projected on clothes coloured with straight-lined geometrical patterns, like chequered, striped, tartan, etc ...
