Forums - Sales Discussion - Aaron Greenburg "LOL's" at VGChartz KINECT Sales Report on his Twitter!!!

I am not sure what is worse. His comments or that some people think he would actually bother to comment with "lol" if Kinect had sold less then what VGC reported?

I bet gaf and the other websites who seem to hate this place are having a fied day over this.

Why haven't MS revealed numbers for Kinect yet?

Why would any company be obliged to tell people here  - or on any website - the number of gadgets they sell? Notice that Sony never commented on the Move numbers (which are way too low here, or no longer comments on NPD numbers which seems to piss off a lot of people here). Learn to live with it and hope the numbers given here are anywhere near the real numbers. I think MS/Sony/Nintendo have better things to do right now (or ever) than to correct numbers on websites.

Eh, I'm talking about PR, not an "obligation". When your products are selling really well, companies are usually very fast to release the figures. Usually a couple of days to release 24 hour data or a little more than a week to release a full seven days data. Nintendo released figures 9 days after Wii released (600K in the US, far less than a million yet it was still seen as a phenomenal start). There's still a few more days for MS to release data in a similar window, and if Kinect is selling well they absolutely will.

Sony commented the figures released by them.

Why should they have to comment about VGC numbers when they show their own.

There is no way he would comment if the numbers were lower. It would be like saying "Haha you don't know what your talking about! We didn't sell 10 units we sold 3! haha jokes on you!" etc. That would obviously be pretty stupid.

If Kinect had sold less they would ignore it. They would want to keep it under-wraps.

The fact of the matter is this site is a lot of guess work, it isn't supposed to be 100% accurate. He will obviously have access to the numbers for it. I doubt very much he would decide to bitch about the site if you were right.

Or he expect the Kinect has sold more but has no number yet.

That would not be stupid, it depends on the goal. If the intention is to make it seem like Kinect is selling really well in an attempt to keep the hype up, then it would be expected.

Edit: Remember that the only time MS will be obliged to tell us sales (and even then they could be like Sony and not mention it in their financial statements) will be well after Christmas. NPD isn't going to release the data publicly so aside from vgchartz MS has complete control over the public info on Kinect sales.

But we have comments from analysts and stores to say it is going better then their expectations. Best Buy today even came out and said they don't think they will have any for xmas now as demand has been high.

Having a comment on twitter is not going to add to or take away hype. People really are thinking about this way too deeply.

From a psychological view point his comments indicate numbers are higher then what has been reported. In this instance what VGC has reported. If he himself expected more that is irelivent as he is commenting on VGC numbers. So he is basically saying the 500k is wrong. The question becomes would a guy who has access to a companies sales data which is obviously far more accurate then here bother to comment on an external sales number if it was lower then reported? Having been an analyst for a good 6 years now i struggle to think of another example where a guy comes out laughing at sales reports when the true figures are actually lower?

Exactly, as Binary pointed out VGChartz is theonly independant source for users. People searching google for "numbers" will be lead here. The fact of the matter is Greenburg can LOL at the numbers, which will obviously be interperated as it being too low, and since NPD has recently whored itself out to the inside and Greenberg is an exec it marginalizes and diminishes the website and thus....th eonly numbers people have access too.

Its not about Greenburg having higher numbers and saying something professional like "We recognize all the hard work that goes into independant tracking but VGChartz is very low with their initial report, now im going to go back to my Usher concert and try to be cool" Okay th elast part was a jab by me, but regardless, hes using his status and clout to diminish public perception without needing any accountability.

Its fairly obvious to me, if MSFT discredits any numbers and NPD isnt reported for 3 months they can then report shipment sale son their terms and control the info.

Uh-oh. The big man on Microsoft campus has spoken.

While hes an undisputed ass, Greenburg knows the real numbers. VGChartz knows the estimated numbers. We'll see who gets the last LOL's in the end.
