The Mets are a baseball team in the same city as the Yankees. Jets share a stadium with the Giants.
As or the US. The MLB and NFL work like that as well. Even more so actually. The US practices a lot of socialism in it's sports.
The NFL is the most socialist and as such has the most parity.
I'd guess it's because the US has less "diehard" fans... and even a lot of the diehards can check out if a season is really abysmal.
That and it's boring to have the same "Big 4" teams fighting over championships EVERY year.
