Nintendo has a special pre-Christmas treat for Wii owners this year in the shape of Hydroventure, a new WiiWare platformer that's set for release on 24 December. According to Nintendo, it's the most hotly anticipated WiiWare game of the year.

Hydroventure is a platformer set in an illustrated magical book called Aquaticus. It used to be known as Fluidity but its name has recently been changed.

Your aim is to rid Aquaticus of a corruptive goop called the "Influence". You have to solve puzzles as you attempt to find the Rainbow Drops that are scattered around the world.

There are over 80 Rainbow Drops which can be found by exploring each level.

During your adventure you'll be able to take the form of liquid, ice and cloud. If you become a cloud you can float to hard to reach areas. Then you can make the cloud rain to return to a liquid state, or even turn into ice and stick to surfaces.

There are some unlockable abilities too. In order to increase your speed when in cloud form, you can use a gust of wind to propel yourself forward or hitch a ride on a passing hot air balloon with the aid of suction power.

When under attack, clouds can be charged up to launch a lightning bolt to destroy enemies and interact with electrical equipment in the levels.

In liquid form, you can can squirt water onto higher platforms or transform into ice form and stick to walls and platforms for a few seconds to reach the goal.

You can also angle your Wii Remote as you tip the world from left to right to move the water. By balancing the Wii Remote in just the right position, you can move lumps of ice, pools of water or clouds through each level. Shaking the Wii Remote will also make the water jump over obstacles and help players to complete tasks and challenges.

As in the real world water can split, get trapped or even evaporate. If the water reserves get low, players can refill their supplies by collecting water found throughout levels. Water however will be lost if it is hit by enemy attacks or if it touches arid or hot surfaces, such as sand or lava.

Hydroventure will cost 1,200 points. Fancy buying it after a hard day's Christmas shopping?

I'm looking forward to it, and on the subject of WiiWare release dates: When the hell is Cave Story going to be available on the European WiiWare?!
