Forums - Sony - 60% of prospective Move owners Nintendo converts?

Joelcool7 said:

Wow its not every day that Sony pretty much claims to be taking over Nintendo's market. But they are doing so in a big way claiming that 60% of the people planning to or probubly buying Move are actually Nintendo consumers. Infact 60% of people planning on buying Move actually already own Nintendo Wii's.

This means that 60% of Move's market are unhappy Nintendo fans looking to get their Move on. Now I wouldn't have believed it myself as a Nintendo fan but the data comes from Ipsos OTX's GamePlan Insights group. Ipsos is a reliable and dignified company and its research is usually spot on. They got the information by conducting a poll of prospective Move owners, coming to the conclusion a majority of them are actually Wii owning Nintendo gamers.

So the question is, why would 60% of Move's buyers want to buy Move when they have Wii? Are these gamers actually converting to Sony, or are they going to play both? Is this accurate do you think Sony is actually stealing that many Wii owners from Nintendo? Do you think both Sony and Nintendo stand to benefit from this or is it lop sided.

What do you think about the announcement?

Sony might actually be right, but what they're saying is not that impressive ...

There are far more multi-console owners this generation than previous generations, and it is entirely plausable that people who own a Wii and a HD console are more likely to be interested in motion gaming than people who own just a HD console alone. Now, being that the majority of Move consumers are existing PS3 owners and Move sales (compared to Wii sales) are very low, even if 80% of people who bought a PS3 with move were disappointed Wii owners the number of people that represents is far too small to be significant for Nintendo at this point in time.

If there are way more multiplatform owners this gen that means that:

a) wealth level of average gamer increased

b) the sole platform wasn't capable of providing him/her with enough games for constant gameplay

c) combination of both of above factors.

It's quite a leap from '60% of prospective move owners also own a Wii' to '60% of prospective Move owners have already buried their Wii's in the garden in preparation to switch consoles'...

I'm a Wii owner, I bought Move. They shall coexist in this house.

VGChartz

i can believe it.  i mean, i for one fit the bill completely.  i got a wii back in the day, then i bought a ps3, then i stopped playing my wii, then i got a move.

multi-console ownership is way up and from the conversations I've had with whoever will talk video games with me there are a lot of disappointed wii owners out there.

if you think about it alot of ps2 gamers went to wii for a while so it makes sense for them to come back to ps3 and do motion gaming with move, alot of ps3 owners have a wii and probably tried out the move just to see how good it is, and then kept move for good, hardly any moves get returned in our store, so people must love them and we sell loads of single move controllers, on just got a re-stock today infact

So everyone that owns a Wii is a nintendo fan? Way to generalize...

Yeah. I know many people who bought the Wii out of hate for Nintendo.

Yeah I know lots of people that buy consoles for one game, not for the console itself.

I doubt that. Being a Nintendo fan myself I doubt I would ever change my wii just because I was disapointed with the motion controls because I`m really happy with its games speacially now. I dont think anyone that really changed it is a Nintendo fan.

OK, even if the numbers are correct that means nothing.

It would be interesting if 60% of Wii owners would buy Move, than Ninty would be in trouble.

But the other way around, like it seems to be, is nothing special or hurting Ninty, imho.

That very likely means the opposite:

Move buyers are just rich persons with multiple consoles, so Ninty couldn't care less. Sony is not stealing the motion-market from Ninty. They just offer something similar and the Move buyers could also support Ninty in the future beside Move, except they sold their wiis.

The worst case scenario would be if 100% of Move buyers don't own a wii, so these motion-gamers would have probably decided to never buy a wii -->lost for Ninty.

I know it sounds confusing, but am i completely wrong?

just to put things in perspective, here are some NPD numbers from September 09.

PS3 Owners
22% only own a PS3
78% also own one or both of the other consoles
42% also own a Wii
36% also own a 360

Assuming those percentages stayed relatively similar over the year they could sell Move to 28.35m current PS3 owners while still maintaining this stat they just presented without "stealing" a Nintendo consumer.

This also wouldn't be too shocking. The people who went PS3 or PS360 probably aren't as friendly towards motion controls. This would lead one to believe that the PSWii owners are more open to motion controls and would adopt Move at a slightly higher rate.

I myself am considering getting Move and I have a Wii, but I also have had a PS3 for 2 years now.

Anyways, percentages are fun, because you can mask meaningful data in a way that looks really impressive. Now, lets see some raw numbers

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit

This reminds me of all those times when people assumed how big a percentage of PS2 owners bought Wii's 360's and PS3's... I have little faith in the validity of this number to be honest.
