Forums - General - Dune vs. Foundation

I have not read Dune, though I have seen pieces of the movie (which is bad haha).  Um, I have read the first part of Foundation, and it is absolutely amazing.  A very intellectual sci-fi piece, although most of his is.  So I couldn't tell you which one, but I very much so loved my read of Foundation.  It's very engaging and relevant to past and current issues in our world.

I prefer Dune just because I did not like having the entire cast of main characters reset 2 or 3 times per book.

With that said, I did still enjoy Foundation, and still recommend you read it eventually as well, but i would go for Dune first...

I haven't read Foundation yet because I am a loathsome godless communist oppressor.

If you do read Dune, though, only read the first four novels; Dune, then Dune Messiah, then Children of Dune, and finally God Emperor of Dune.

God Emperor of Dune is my favorite science fiction novel ever written.

-What a dreadful thing to say! The film is a work of the genius mind of David Lynch and you not only call the film bad but fail to watch all of it!

The film is great! Ok - it is a rubbish adaptation of the book, is too short, doesn't make much sense, and rushes through the story, but it is a thing of beauty! Fantastic characters, beautifully filmed, really evocative of the spirit of the story.

Assuming of course you didn't mean the horrendous extended edition with voice over intro which is definitely rubbish!

I'm in the mood to read some sci fi. Help me choose (I assume people on this site ought to know) out of these two classics! Which one's better, and more interesting? Which did you think was better written?

##Sorry for double post##

Have you seen the film (or <shudder> miniseries) of Dune btw, Sapphi?

I had Dune bedsheets when I was like 8.

I've never heard of Foundation.

So i'd say Dune.

Edit: Found a picture of the Bedsheets.  For the record... Sci-Fi books are a kids best friend when you read at a "high level."  Lots in there for a kid's imagination to stay engaged, but it's still written at an adult level so you learn a lot too.

Never read foundation, but Dune is one of my favourite books of all time.

Out of the books I've read it's only eclipsed by LotR in scope.

No, and considering what you've people been saying about them, I'm glad I haven't.

I wasn't really paying attention when I opened this thread and I expected a poll

Anyhow - this really can't be an either/or! As Jagged said - they are both great series -or at least - they are both great books. I'm not wildly keen on ANY of the Dune sequels tbh even the ones that were written by Frank Herbert himself whereas the Foundation series is all pretty good.

They've both got a really huge scope - encompassing the whole galaxy, but they also both manage to keep you interested in a small set of characters as well. I think Dune is the better book though because of the grandness of its ideas, the better writing, and the fact that Frank Herbert does a much better job of characterisation.

The foundation series however, is much more believable, and is definitely better if you don't want to have to read the glossary to keep up with what all of the words mean!

The first few times I tried to read Dune - I didn’t like it, whereas Foundation was really easy to get in to. Now however, Dune is probably my favourite sci-fi book.

I wanted to make a poll, but I don't know how.

I guess it's no surprise you visit sites like this. The signs are always there!
