Forums - Sony - Easy way to move from PS3 to PS3?

So I'm going to setup my 2nd 360 in my home office and I'd like to do the same with my 2nd PS3.  For my 360 I'm just going to store my profile and save games on a 16GB USB drive so it's easy to move from upstairs to downstairs.

Is there a similar thing I can do like that with the PS3? I remember when I got my slim I had troubles with some save games that wouldn't transfer from console to console unless I did a complete transfer.

If it's as simple as a USB flash drive, what size do you recommend?

I'm pretty sure there is a utility somewhere in the rather badly (in my view) organized system settings that allows you to transfer via USB from one PS3 to another.  I could totally be making that up though but I'm sure it's the case.

I know there's an option for that but I want something where say The Wife is using my main TV in the living room and I want to play my PS3 so I just go downstairs and play while she's using that TV.

Most of my gaming sessions would be on my main TV but I would occasionally want to play downstairs and would need to easily transfer to the downstairs one for that session and then easily transfer back when I'm finished.

There isn't a way that I know of to transfer everything other than using the data transfer utility.

I used the data transfer utility a while back and you just have to hook up an ethernet cable between the two and it takes a 2-4 hours depending on the amount of memory you are transferring.

Ah.  Sorry, quick read and I missed the fact you want to go back and forth.  That could be tricky.  I'm not aware of anything that makes it easy although in theory, if it's the same account you should be able to just copy the saves onto a flash drive and then back off again.  I believe the PS3 checks the save file vs the account rather than the PS3 ID as well.  But... if it does check PS3 ID it might complain.

I'd test it first with maybe a new save.  Copy it to a USB.  Try it on the second PS3 then copy it back again.

Or get a PSP and indulge in remote play!

Well that sucks there's no easy way, luckily I don't think it was many games that I couldn't easily transfer saves but my other worry was save size.  Aren't the save sizes usually pretty large?

Best thing to do is just move your saves back and fourth with a USB stick and hope a game you play doesn't have their save files locked to consoles and just to PSN.

No, save sizes are very small.  Installs are what's big.

Now, you could go back and forth between your 2 systems for most games.  But some of them, like Heavy Rain, just won't let you copy your game for some retarded developer reason.  Otherwise, you have to go to each individual save files you have and copy them to your USB drive.

Can you save directly to you USB flash drive?

No, you can't.  At least as far as I know, when you save, the game won't ask you to choose the storage drive you wish to put your game on.  That's unfortunate, I will agree to that.  The future (next gen) will probably fix that though, with Cloud saving and stuff like that.  I just think it's really stupid that some games will lock the saves to an individual console (like Heavy Rain, among some others, as I mentioned earlier).  Copying files to a USB drive doesn't take long though (2-3 seconds per file), so it's not THAT bothersome.
