Kinect: Is it Just a Camera? - PS EYE Seems To Think So

Microsoft has had much to say about their revolutionary new controller-less gaming technology. Kinect is using everything from inferred depth senors to an RGB camera. According to Microsoft, what they are doing with Kinect can only be done on the Xbox 360, mostly because of Microsoft's proprietary software, which combines all the new technology they've squeezed into the device. Kinect is definitely a new technology, however, camera games are not. The concept of interacting with digital objects through a camera is actually older than both the XBox and the PlayStation 2. The technology originated on the PC around the time web-cams became popular, and when PC's were the number gaming platform.

Once the Playstation 2 took over the market the EYE-Toy was launched and brought camera base gaming, or controler-less gaming, to hardcore gamers. The EYE-Toy saw some good success during Sony's glory years, and a reintroduction on the Playstation 3 as the Playstation EYE. Motion controls are growing in popularity and so is controller-less gaming. Unfortunately for Microsoft, Sony was first to reveal the technology being used in Kinect. One game that showed the power of Sony's camera is Eye-Pet. Before the Playstation Move, EYE-Pet required no controllers and gamers used only their hands to interact with their pets. In the UK using the PlayStation Move control with the game is still optional.

The claims Microsoft has made about Kinect and its revolutionary new camera design, has been somewhat stunted by the Playstation Exclusive, 'Kung Fu Live'. Given the fact the Sony was the first to discover the IR camera technology Kinect is running, it wouldn't be far fetched to believe The technology has already been included with the Playstation EYE. 'Kung Fu Live' has amazing tracking, and reads your every move seamlessly. It's a very Kinect like game, and one of the best controller-less experiences to date.

Being the great innovators they are, Microsoft's is looking to taking camera base gaming to new levels of interactivity, included with some new bells and whistles to make you feel like your right in the action. Though Microsoft has done a great deal with Kinect, most will not appreciate the technology put into the device, and will see it as noting more than the Xbox 360's version of the EYE-Toy. The other hang up Kinect has, is that most of the Technology it has already exists in the Playstation Eye, which makes Kinect look like it's just a camera, and less like a revolution.

I really dont like motion controls. Hopefully regular controllers will never be replaced

To a degree Playstation Move can do what Kinect can (controllerless gaming). But Kinect can't do what Move can.

If this is true(I know its not...but lets preted it is), come next week when the sales are in, Sony will be kicking themselves for not making PSEye more viable in the market.

Seriously though...PSeye doesn't have the software coding behind it, half of the hardware features and gaming/marketing support needed to make it half of what Kinect is at the moment. And Kinect isn't even all the way there yet...

To a non discerning eye, even though Kinect is a definite jump from Wiimote and Move, I could see how someone wouldn't be like "this is the biggest thing since sliced bread!"  It's different, but I feel like the experience is similar enough that, unless marketing campagins are more amazing then I give them credit for, it won't be hailed as the best thing ever.

instead of...

"  The other hang up Kinect has, is that most of the Technology is has already exist in the Playstation Eye, which makes Kinect look like its just a camera, and less like a revolution.  "

the last line should have read:

"  The other hang up Kinect has, is that most of the Technology is has already exist in the Playstation Eye, which makes Kinect look like its just a 150$ camera, and less like a revolution.  "

The bolded part is what this comes down to. Microsoft is currently using half a Billion US-Dollars to convince the pubilc that Kinect is something radically new that hasn't existed before. And it seems to be working.
