James Polk.

Jacksonian Democrat without the asshole policies of Jackson. Managed to negotiate the Northwest with Britain as well improve trade with them (through the Walker Tariff). Also started the Mexican-American War and secured California and Texas (our two most important states today), as well as Arizona and New Mexico. Almost got us Cuba too.

He should've just taken all of Mexico so there would be less illegal immigrants today.

Didn't he also have the possibility of just taking over all of Mexico?  Was that his term?  Also Lincoln is still considered better.  Civil War, peoplez!

He probably did. He was facing a lot of opposition from the Whigs though (Lincoln being among the most prominent of them), and I doubt he would have ever gone through with it even if he could.

Oh, I see. If it's "the best president after being president," I would say Teddy Roosevelt. The dude almost was president again.

Yeah, it's best elder statesman - the person who did the best work after their presidency. So Lincoln is pretty much disqualified.

Clinton hired guys like Cuomo who resonates of intillectuality, intillectuals who decide everyone should have the American dream when only those who work for it and cease each opportunity should get their dream.

Cuomo lowered the regulations on Freddy Mac and Fannie May causing an eventual explosion on the housing scene. We call them Sub-Prime loans, the thing is when Congress tried to investigate  they had to follow the shredded paper trail to the forest of Once Paper Embers.

Guy had no character to at least take his part of the blame, it would only have been illegal if he was lobbied to do it.

Otherwise Clinton had his skeletons... They were pretty nasty ones and I'm not reffering to anything not related to his presidency.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The usual response is Lincoln at #1.  Also, Washington, Roosevelt, Reagan and JFK are thought highly of.

Lincoln had to navigate the country through a lot of crap, and he did it well.  He surrounded himself with both allies and political enemies in his cabinet to hear all sides of arguments rather than going in blind.  He was a clear and succint orator, getting his point across very effectively.  He had to reunite the union in one of it's darkest times.  And he succeeded.

Yeah, Lincoln did a great job being an Ex president... in his casket.

I'm pretty sure he means best as in "Did the most good after being president."

I'd say Jimmy Carter myself.  Soley because I don't know much about ex presidents before that.

Theodore Roosevelet was pretty cool too... but i may be biased seeing as he's my favorite president... and what i'd look for in a politician today.   Well outside of the whole "going to war just for young men to be abe to say they went" philosphy.

We need to get back to Fair Deal policies.

Ah, misread the question. Great fail!

Id have to agree, Jimmy Carter.  He's worked with Habitat for Humanity for decades, as well as many other positive actions to benefit many.

As a non-american I'd say Ronald Reagan.

The worst of the last 50 years probably Jimmy Carter and his weak politics.

Edit: read the title wrong but Carter would still be one of the worst (that picture with Castro says everything)

I find it odd that Reagan's role after his presidency, as he slid into the grip of alzheimer's, was largely to help Nancy advocate for stem-cell research

Definitely one of the more contradictory post-presidential roles

Well, nothing makes the powerful care more about something then their own be affected by it and reminding them they aren't invincible.

Nancy Reagan, Michael J Fox, The guy who was Superman who's name I forget...

they care about Stem Cell Research because it would help them... if they had cancer they'd all be for cancer research.

Of course, that's not to say there is something wrong with said people, hell if you or I were rich and famous we'd do the same thing.

It always makes me mad though when people are called humanitarians because they put a lot of support into causes that will help them... and by extension other people as well.   Well not mad.  More bemused.

What's wrong with taking a picture with Fidel Castro.

I'd talk to Fidel Castro if I had the chance.  He's one of the more interesting figures in the world.

People like Castro and Mugabe who went from liberators to overlords... are some of the most interseting people to me.  I'd love to get inside their heads and see the reasoning.
