I think the main draw in a hardware revision would be cost cutting (cheaper optical drive, remove GC ports, internal revisions, etc) which in turn would allow Nintendo to drop MSRP further. Imagine what sort of impact an $99 Wii slim would have.
I also wouldn't rule out a "smaller model" revision, even post successor launch. Nintendo did that for NES, SNES and GBA.
