Hey, that way he can ignore the fact that things weren't really getting better and it was an illusion caused by unsustainable government spending that caused a surplus in invetory aquirment without the proper buying habits to back it up.

When the economy double dips in a couple quarters because of invetories being higher then were previously expected he can blame the republicans.

Don't blame me!  I voted for Optimus Prime and his "we need more Energon" platform.

But yeah... 2 years of progress scares the fuck out of this country.  There was actually a whole century between the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil Rights Act.  Hell, in many states it was still illegal for married couples to have oral sex in their own bedrooms until 2003.  It's currently legal to be gay and in the military, but only if you live a lie.  It's ridiculous.  The whole country has a Constitution fetish, and nobody's even read it.

Well I look forward to seeing our new Republican overlords cut some spending.  I'm really excited to see which part of the government they want to shrink or destroy first, or if they see this as a mandate from the people to filibuster 100% of the legislation instead of just 99% of it.

looks like the senate is gonna be 51-49 or 52-48 depending on washington.  I didn't think the democrats would get west virginia and nevada so easily, the rest has been a bloodbath beside the ones that were obviously going to be democrat.

CNN reported that california is projected to vote against prop 19.  That is unfortunate.

Any history of minority government in the US? IE the party with the most seats still doesn't have a majority and has to form a coalition with some other parties and/or independents? I ask this because thats whats happening over here and so far it seems ok.

Sort of.

They've had to court a few independents here or there to get the job done.

It's not really important though because you don't "form" a government in the US.

Highest party gets the majority.

Weaker party gets the minority.

Remaining indepents and third parties have to choose to caucus with one or the other.

Rarely has there ever been enough independent and third party candidates to make a big enough difference that they needed to be heavily courted outside of support for their "pet" issue.

There is no "Vote of no confidence" or anything.

Heck, you don't even need to stay in the party that elected you in the US.

I'm assuming someone in the UK can't just say "I was elected as labor, but I'm going to be a Tory now!'

In the US... you can and MANY do switch from Republican to Democrat or vice versa at the drop of a hat.

Theoretically if you had a third party group (Like say the tea party) capture like 5-10 senate spots or 20-30 representative positions such a thing could happen but our third parties are never remotely that strong.  Well not since like the 1800s.

If there was one thing both major parties could agree with... it was laws to restirct third parties from ever having a shot.

Please tell me what piece of legislation this administration has passed that make bringing up the Emancipation Proclamation and Civil Rights Act a legitimate comparison. I'd love to know what we've "progressed" in. A higher deficit and higher unemployment? Ok, I take it back.
