My friend in Latin American has a chipped Wii and buys a combination of genuine and pirated games.

Anyone know from experience if any of the updates cause the Wii to stop functioning as he is too scared to download any software?

Yes, some of the updates will stop it from functioning.

However, that's only going to do anything for some consoles. It depends on the chip.
