also the difference between sony's figures and vgc's figures ps2 has an over 11 million difference so.. obviously something is wrong with playstation tracking, and PSP is over 6 million in difference

It is obvious that VGC has the PS2 numbers wrong over the last few years, but the PSP isn't 6m off.

Sony changed their reporting method and depending on how you count the numbers it is easy to double count systems. Sony also doesn't have correct public quarterly report prior to 2006. Using their website numbers you get

Calandar Year Sony Shipped (m) VGC (m)
2006 9.6* 9.39
2007 11.8 12.36
2008 15.5 13.88
2009 10.6 10.29
2010 4.1 4.39
Total 51.6* 50.31
Diff   1.29

*note that in 2006 I estimated 1.5m units for Q1 since the data is incomplete. 1.5m seems fair considering 2005 performance and CY 2007 Q1 shipments

To argue that the PSP is undertracked by 6m means that VGC is undertracking ~5m units in 2005 and 2004. In other words you are accusing VGC of missing 4m sales in EMEAA in 2005 alone!!! I can say this because in 2004 the PSP was only released in Japan, and in 2005 we have NPD and Famitsu to compare to. I would say at most that the PSP was undertracked by 1.3m over the last 5 years.

To top it off, SECJ just said that they shipped 62m PSPs through sep 2010, while VGC has that number at 60.4m which means most likely that the PSP is undertracked by ~0.6m.

EDIT: heh, I could have saved myself a lot of time by just typing the last paragraph first

I did some research and the last PR number, where  Sony is apparently using shipment sales, that I could find is this:

http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/100303e.html

That says 60.2 million PSPs shipped, the document is dated 03/03/2010, which suggests it was using data up to Q3 2009. Adding 60.2 million to Q4 2009, Q1 2010 and Q2 2010 (1.4, 1.2, 1.5) gives us 64.3 million units shipped as of September 30th.

Also, http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/82575/sony-profits-ships-35m-ps3s-in-september-10-quarter/ The source has the numbers at 64.2 million shipped as of September 30th, which is off by .1 but it's ok.

So in reality we have 64.3 million PSPs and 147.6 million PS2s shipped as of Sept 30th. For the week ending October 2nd, VGC has the PSP at 60.39 million and the PS2 at 136.95 million. VGC is undertracking both of them, but the PSP number is not as bad a leo-j made it sound, still a couple of million off, which suggests to me that the number you're quoting from SCEJ could possibly be sold through numbers.

thats weird...

But MS has 360 at 44.6M and VGC at 43.6M or so by september ends.

Shipped vs sold.

adjustments will be made just give VGC time to figure out how much is needed to be adjust down or up specially now that we know there are small regions VGC is finding it hard to track hence PS3 adjustments.
