Forums - Sony - MS's Greenberg: "Moves a great product"

Microsoft product director Aaron Greenberg has branded Sony's PlayStation Move a "great product" in the lead-up to Kinect's launch next month.

Many industry watchers see Sony's wand-based peripheral as a direct market competitor to Microsoft's Kinect camera - with both gunning for the living room family market.

However, Greenberg admits that his rival enjoyed "favourable" reviews - but says that the two products offer different experiences.

"Here's what I think: Move is just a different approach to the market," he told Eurogamer. "We're thinking about Kinect as a key component to the platform, and what they've done with Move...

"First off, it's a great product and the reviews seem to be pretty favourable. But they've targeted it purely to existing owners. They've said you can decide whether you want to play existing titles on the platform, like SOCOM, with the controller or with Move.

"Our approach has been different. We're not going to take Halo, a game you love playing with the controller, and offer you the option to play it with a different interface which may or may not have been designed for that game. We want to build completely unique experiences from the ground up which are designed for Kinect. It's just a different approach."

Nice to see someone like him being grown up and professional.

Certainly a more measured and mature response about a competitor than what's been seen from the Big 3 industry reps in the past. BUT, Greenberg is still selling Sony and Move short as a way to promote his product (nothing wrong with that, it's part of how you market your product). He's suggesting Sony's primary strategy is to tack Move on to existing products as an optional control device. When we all know there are plenty of Move required games out now, and there will be more to come. So there are games being designed exclusively arounf Move.

What is half true about Greenberg's statment on Move is that an important part of the Move strategy is to get people to use Move for titles that are Move optional (like Heavy Rain, MAG, SOCOM 4 etc). And it's working, people are enjoying playing the likes of Heavy Rain with Move. This is certainly a significant difference between the Move and Kinect strategy. But it's wrong to say Sony is purely targetting existing owners. "significantly", "primarily", "substantially", yes  I would totally agree with those sentiment. "Purely", no that's hyperbole.

My thoughts exactly.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

He is absolutely spot on with that... I agree with every single word.

You agree with "purely" targetting existing owners? Surely that's overstating things a bit. Sony really aren't trying to get new PS3 owners with Move this whole holidays? That's really not credible.

I agree with every single word too. Including the Purely. From the beginining, Sony is trying to push Move to the core gamers; looking at their ads, comments and/or adapted/incoming Move games... And I do not feel they want to target the same people than the Wii/Kinect which is a big mistake in my oppinion.

Yes there are few cusual games available for a much casual audience but it is nothing compared to the 2 others.

Like I said.. i agree with every word he said.

Time will tell.

I agree that, near-enough, that will be the outcome of Move.  But equally, I am sure Sony is hoping it isn't.

Haven't they all? Praising a competitors product, while pointing out the differences and marketing your own is a lot better than the crap that has been spewing from the likes of Inafune.

Come on. It's so obvious what he's doing. He really wanted to say, "Move has no games, it's derivative, and at least the Wiimote doesn't require a camera. It's even more expensive than Kinect. (Where YOU are the controller!) Did I mention it has NO GAMES?"But he likes to be subtle about needling good-hearted, loyal, honest, and true PlayStation fans like myself.

Sad performance, Greenberg. Just shameful. Kill yourself, please.

Sony said they are going for Wii owners

they are offering an Wii HD experience nintendo dont offer

I dont think they knew that the current userbase would embace it so much

hell its a great device, you can squeeze the top for hours, hell i am doing it now

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
