Not a bad idea. Mobile is eating everyone lunch. Putting PSN into their phones could actually work well enough, especially in japan. PSP2 is definitely not this.
I have a feeling what they are doing is a two pronged attack. Diversify the PSP1/PS1 games onto sony ericsson phones then come out with a game only device ala the PSP2. Unfortunately I think they will make the mistake of using UMD again for PSP2, which is going to limit it again. Though its possible they may also do two different versions of the PSP2 like they have now, with most games being released on PSN and UMD.
The PSPphone will probably not be capable of playing PSP2 games. But may have the added bonus of playing normal android games.
I do kinda like the idea of replacing the crap nubs with that long touchpad thingy.

they did that for the PSP and what we got was the PSPgo and look were that went lol

Where did it not go that you thought it should have gone? People keep thinking it was an attempt to sell DS numbers, but I think it was just an alternative attempt to see what would fly.
I bought one and I like it better than my old PSP. I certainly have no qualms about not carrying 2 or 3 UMD discs around with me when I can carry my _entire_ library on my PSPGo. It's sad that some game developers don't want to pony up to get on PSN, but that's their loss. Very little that is UMD only is even worth bothering over and there are plenty of PS1/Mini games that are worth it.
Pure digital is where the bulk of games sales will be in the future. Most kids don't give a crap about physical media, they don't even give a crap about brands anymore. If old fogies want to stick with their antiquated physical copies of games, I'm sure SONY will do that using secure flash cards.
