Forums - General - NFL lockout could happen next year

http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20101024/ARTICLE/10241092/2050/SPORTS?p=1&tc=pg -------link. A lockout in the NFL could happen next year if a labor agrement is'nt resolved. This article goes into weather one should care at all. With player's making millons of dollars and the average joe barely getting buy,why should one care? I'm a long time NFL fan so I'm personally torn about this and hope this does'nt happen. The NFL is so popular in Amercia, this would be the same thing as no soccer been played in Europe for a year. So,I hope they resolve this,so I can watch my Dallas cowboys play next year. lol

Man it would suck to not have Football in my life and watch the Vikings crush the Cowboys (I'm really sorry I couldn't resist), but I can also see the dilemmas the players are going through even if a lot of them make millions. I think the main problem is that the player contracts in the NFL are terrible since they aren't gauranteed.

If a player is signed to a $20,000,000 contract and gets paralyzed in the preseason ending their career they get $0 of that contract (maybe a pension??). Or if a team just drops them after the first game without any trade deal, they only get what they were paid up to that point. If their contracts were more than just pieces of paper with letters and numbers on them, then I don't think they'd be complaining as much or at least theiur complaints wouldn't hold up considering our economy.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

I guess nobody cares about the NFL like I do,I hope dallas can beat the giants today,I hope that they can work something out say I can get my NFL fix next year,if not I'll just play the new madden. end thread/lol.

That would really suck if there was.

Honestly though I think the NFL needs a complete overhaul. Its become such a pussy league with all the rules for protecting players. Even the slightest tap on the Quarterback's head is a 15 yard roughing the passer penalty, what kind of shit is that? And if you hit a guy hard as fuck its "unnecessary roughness" even if its clean. The NFL needs to go back to what it was back in like the 60's and 70's where it was rough and running backs had to fight for each yard.

And yet the Holdout will be because the NFL wants 18 games.  Which will greatly increase injuries.

Also, there is plenty of equipment out there that could stop concussions like new helmets, that the NFL doesn't want to pay for because said companies can't afford liscensing fees.

NFL is just trying to act like any other company that sells an unhealth product... do just enough so that you look concerend but maximize profits, regardless of the health costs.

As a model, the NFL is never going to be compatable with conucssion research until they worry less about the players actions, and more about the players equipment and games played.

I didn't read all the article but it sounds like they tried to make it well I have a dangerous job, why can't I be paid millions? pitty party sort of thing.

  • Anyone can drive a delivery truck, not anyone can play football at the skill level the superstars do
  • Driving a delivery truck isn't nearly as dangerous as an NFL players job.  Every job has risks-- someone could spill water on my desk and I could be electrocuted.

I would *love* to make a million dollars in a night but that doesn't mean I can or should be jealous of the peopel that do.  Or I guess I can be jealous but that doesn't mean I should expect to make the same kind of money.

In this economic climate, I don't think that the average person will be very sympathetic to the players side. That might not even matter though - during the NHL lockout, a majority of fans sided with the owners.

Players makes millions of dollars and owners make hundreds of millions.  Regardless of what happens, millionaires fighting over money won't get much sympathy from me.

If anything it makes me wish ticket prices were cheaper, but since thats decided by the free market they could atleast make stadium food prices reasonable.

Not to mention, the owners are making billions.

If your making your boss billions, you deserve millions... lots of millions.

You ever see the quality of life your average NFL player has after retirement?  They really do deserve the money they're paid if not more.

Baseketball and Baseball you can make the overpaid arguements.... but football?  Football is a sport I would not play proffessionally even if I had the skill to do so.

It annoys me that the player unions have to deal with the league as a whole.  Feels like a monopoly violation.
