Should Developers make more games then just the Genres they specialize in

I want a lawyer to perform auto repair work.

In this day and age where production costs have reached a point where people that specialize in a genre are failing to sell enough to stay afloat, asking a company to try something that they don't excel at is asking them to commit suicide.

I think developers should make whatever they want

Publishers on the other hand, should attempt to release a variety of games in different genres (take Nintendo or Capcom for example, who both publishers games in many different genres)

Maybe cutting their teeth on smaller title like how Epic did with Shadow Complex or how Jaffe (God of War) did with Calling All Cars is the way to go.  But as gamers, do we reeeeaaaaally want to see a company like Bunjie make a racing game when we want them making the next big FPS?  The result will either be lackluster or it will be a berath of fresh air.....but more than likely, it will be the former rather than the latter.  Remember Auto Modelista?

I was thinking today that a lot of Developers/Publishers make more games outside of the genres they specialize in.

Like Square-Enix for example who did a lot of other games out side of FF, KH and DQ. and even if they stick to the game Genre should they try to make new series other then there main ones.

BTW I am not only taking about Square-Enix.

Edit sometimes when you do other projects and not just focus on the main series and or genres you can get your mined more focused on developing your main series I believe.

Well they could try. They might end up specializing in more than 1 genre like from software

its been confirmed today that GT5 has a weather system, track editor and go karts! seriously i think this is going to be the best selling in the series even beating GT3 sales of 14 million plus!

I just said "Auto Modellista" in my Droid's voice controlled Google search and it looked up "How to model Wii stuff".  I thoght it was funny.

Eg The Bouncer

For the record, I LOVED The Bouncer.  Best looking game on the market at the time of its release.  I don't know why reviewers were so hard on it.  It was a blast!

I remember that game I own the game XD

good promise of a Anime style racer but no substance.

Japanese Pop Culture Otaku

expanding on this idea Kojima Hideo San seems to be known today as Mr MGS or the most part but you might remember a lot of other amazing genre redefining games that he did and would be awesome to see reboots of SNATCHER and Policenauts like when he rebooted the MSXs MG with MGS on PS.

Snatcher was awesome, I played the English version of the MSX2 version and the Sega CD version. Truly a revolutionary game. Not only that, but I'd argue that the VATS system from Fallout 3 was inspired by SD Snatcher.

I've downloaded the English version of Policenauts recently, and I plan on playing it soon.
