The punishment for cowardice as death by firing squad and I'll leave it to you to work out what happened to thousands of innocent soldiers.

306 soldiers were shot for cowardice in world war one

Again, an example of exaggeration by those apposed to it.

Cos non-Commonwealth people don't count as people? Also people who were shot for cowardice in all years that weren't 1914-1918?

Totally exaggerating!

This is an issue in which I can't have a definite stance, it's not a black or white thing as there are many shades of grey relating the justice or the applications of the death penalty.

In one hand, it's my personal conviction that people who murder, rape or abuse a person, be it either an adult or a child (but in the cases of a child I'm more strongly in favour of the death sentence), deserve this kind of punishment, as these are acts that destroy not only the victim's life, but also everyone around him/her as well, family, friends, coworkers, etc.

But on the other hand, any system that deals this kind of justice (or any other for that matter), is prone to various mistakes and judgment errors, and not even with the use of modern scientific methods such as DNA comparison can these mistakes be completely abolished.

So to me, the best solution would be life imprisonment, which is something i'm ashamed of my country for not having (maximum penalty here is 25 years, which is rarely used, even on the only case of serial killing we've had since be became a democracy in 1974).

Oh my. So did the serial killer get off?

Yeah, he only got 17 years for four murders and five kidnappings, he got out of jail last year.

I pity you. This is probably the most outrageous thing I've heard all day. In a way the death penalty would've been better than this outcome (as much as it pains me to say it).

It was extremely outrageous for the population here in my country as well. There were manifestations against his release and when he got out, he had to be sent to his house with a couple of policemen and was protected by the police for a couple of months.

Unfortunately our justice is way too meek in this kind of cases. Heck, we're still judging a pedophilia case in an institution, which trial begun on 2004. Most of the accused will only get one year penalties and the biggest penalty is going to be no more than ten years. Taken in account that more than 100 children during a span of 30 years were abused in that institution, this case has sicken the public opinion to no end.

Just when you think you can't get any more outraged...

Against, I think killing people is abhorent, especially when its not needed, I can just about understand some wars and self defence things, but really, killing someone out of blood lust? no thanks.

Against it

Ahh, well it's good to know that you're obviously for the death penalty. You just seem to wish determining who the criminal is, were more accurate.

I agree with you.

I only quoted that section to emphasize what I was responding too. He was taking only about WW I and the UK. Here is the entire quote:

"Such a cock up on a monumental scale occurred during the 1st World War.  Basically, many men became shell shocked while on the front line, as it was accepted as a condition the army saw it as cowardice.  The punishment for cowardice as death by firing squad and I'll leave it to you to work out what happened to thousands of innocent soldiers."
