If I recall correctly the SNES sold way fewer units then the NES loosing out to the Genesis.

Just like playstation is a common name. A lot of  people do not know sony makes it. 

Another good example was when I went to a shop and the mother of a child said she wants zelda for her son's playstation.

Nintendo is extremely famous among every age group. Do you guys even realize those people who are now in their late 30s played games during the NES era?

It's like talking about retirement to people below 30: they don't realize THEY are the ones affected by demographic change and cuts in pensions...

According to "Allensbach", one of the biggest research companies in Germany, more than 80% of all germans know the "brand" Nintendo. And Germany is hardly as obsessed over Nintendo as the US for instance.

Oh no! We can't use that "stupid casualz" argument anymore

I don't know where you live but I read recently that Mario was rivaling Mickey Mouse as the worlds most popular mascot/cartoon character. Also I even today hear people say "Do you have any Nintendo games" its not as common as it was in the 90's but people still call video games Nintendo games.

I remember back during the Genesis people would talk about playing their Nintendo games, but it was Genesis games not Nintendo. Fact is Nintendo synonymous with video games. Everyone who know anything about video games knows about Nintendo.

Nintendo didn't need a brand like PlayStation, their name alone sells alot of products. DS and Wii both prove Nintendo doesn't need to brand everything the same way. The Nintendo brand is strong enough to sell any product they send to market.

I don't think so. Sometimes I hear people calling video games playstation games even if they aren't but I've never heard people calling them nintendo games.

And I don't think even for e second that people playing Genesis games called them nintendo games. Also you stating something does not make it a fact. Everyone who knows anything about video games knows about sony, too.

Were I live it's the same. Every home console is a PlayStation. People don't see that name as a brand, but as a product. PlayStation = any home console.

They call the PSP a "gameboy" though.  "Mom I don't want the same Gameboy as James, I want the other playstation gameboy"
