"Our main goal was to make sure that all gameplay affecting items are findable, so that no-one can buy an in-game advantage over someone who’s choosing to find their items."
So you either have to spend a lot of time playing the game to get all the items that give you an advantage, or you have to buy them.
That doesn't sound so good.

while TF2 in its core is still great, I don't like all these RPGish changes in smaller numbers. with the class update changes the changes were significant (like greatly reducing the scout health, etc). but I'm fine with the cosmetic and "uniqueness" changes:
"Then there are a new kinds of items, like Tools, which are items you use to customize other items. For instance, you could use a Name Tag to permanently change the name of one of your other items, or you could use a Paint Can to change the color of your favorite hat."
and the "minigames" that Robin described in the interview sounds great. aaaand: "There are a really small number of cosmetic items that you can’t find. On the flip side, there are a few items that aren’t purchasable either."
the words above were backed by NUCLEAR WEAPONS!
If you don't like the new items, there are plenty of vanilla TF2 servers for you to play on.
If you don't like the whole microtransaction thing then don't buy anything, nobody is forcing you.

Who said they don't like the new items?

You can trade, craft and random find them. Also, they are supposed to be sidegrades, so not an advantage.

I just don't much like these RPG-ish things in a FPS, even less when you can buy the items.

I am starting to tire of all these items and such though. Then again, I also haven't played a lot of games recently due to internships and school.
I don't know, perhaps a little vanilla is in order.
I didn't realize just how annoying the trading system is until I recently restarted playing TF2. Now most servers are full of people spamming chat with trading requests.
