Forums - Gaming - Marvell's tri-core ARM chip has near-PS3-level graphics

It's been confirmed by Marvell that their upcoming tri-core processor is going to be used for an upcoming gaming platform. It's extremely likely that this will be some form of handheld device given Marvell's commitment to mobile processing technologies and the low power requirements of the chip. Rumours suggest that this chip will power the 3DS but it could very well also be for the PSP2 or some unknown competitor entering the market. See the links below for more info.

Anyways, yesterday Marvell announced the new tri core ARMADA 628 chip and has suggested that it is within "spitting distance" of the PS3's RSX in terms of processing capabilities. See the link below for more tech info if interested.

Whatever this is going to be used for.. It's going to be quite game-changing in the mobile entertainment space.

I think it's most likely going to be used for the tablet Sony Ericsson is cooking up to introduce the gaming platform it's creating on Android (http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/exclusive-sony-ericsson-to-introduce-android-3-0-gaming-platfor).

No one else finds this interesting? I must be pretty lame.

Can't be for a handheld device... probably for a tablet or netbook cause this would drain your phone's battery within 10 minutes...

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

its not lame, but saying its close to the power of the ps3 is bs. as the ps3 has cell which isnt being considered in this article.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I believe it as PS3 video card is 6 year old architecture and quite poor by modern standards.

After reading this article, I don't get what this is going to be? Laptop GPU? Tablet? Portable handheld?

Its still too weak for a gaming laptop, and probably too power thursty for a handheld...so tablet?

Jesus christ dude...it clearly talks about video card power. Stop being the PS3 defence ranger...

I didn't write the article. In the article the author states:

"The 628's GPU can push 200 million triangles per second (MT/s); for some perspective, compare the Playstation 3's GPU at 250MT/s This GPU, plus the three Sheeva PJ4 cores, means that you can put console-caliber gaming performance—1080p graphics and all—in a handheld."

I actually clarified in my post that it has been "suggested that it is within "spitting distance" of the PS3's RSX in terms of processing capabilities"

I think it's going to be for tablets. Browsers and web technology are adopting hardware acceleration now and despite me not liking so, touch-screen gaming seems to be catching on. Sony Ericsson also announced plans to start a gaming platform for Android 3.0 and there've been leaks and rumours of a PSP related tablet. This chip would fall in line with those details.

I appologize too...that makes sense and I forget not everyone looks in to the specs being discussed with detail.

From a technical point, this really isn't all that far fetched...for a portable GPU to match the PS3 GPU.

If Microsoft did one thing right, its have  the "Xenos" GPU as 360s GPU. It is really not comparable to any desktop video card as it has 48 unified shaders, tessellation support, and has 10MB of integrated eDRAM. Its almost a generation ahead of the PS3's video card... "RSX" which is quite literally a 7900GT clocked to 550MHz with only 8 ROPs.

While it would sound as if the PS3 would be at a disadvantage graphically, this is not the case when used correctly as the Cell is very capable of taking on rendering tasks as well, almost like a second GPU. The Cell is a beast...and this mobile GPU alone can not compete with the PS3 visuals at all thanks to the Cell.
