The Mini DVD disc's were a burden with limited capacity. The GC was quite capable of running many of the big games for PS2/XBOX but no dual layer DVD compatibility meant it was doomed!!
Aside from the other problems mentioned here, shelf space for retailers became a concern and they had to loose one system and focus on the stronger two. Gamecube hardware and software all but disappeared here in the UK. Widely available online but with no window or shelf space in the high street its no wonder sales plummeted.
Despite this it was only a few million behind XBOX.
Shelf space will also be a factor in the current (pointless) HD format war!!
