Forums - Sony - Sony disables 3rd party devices with latest firmware

ZenfoldorVGI said:

So, when someone figures out how to hack the PS3 with a Blu-Ray, is Sony going to disable gaming?

If true, this is some bullshit. I can't backup my PS3 on my portable HD, and I can't play music off my thumb drive? What the fuck use is an electronics device in 2010 without USB functionality?

My Externall HDD works just fine... I don't think they're talking about those devices.

yes but if the info is a lie then it kind of is fear mongering.

Nope, if this update disables any device then any warning is just that, a simple warning.  Making up percentages was silly of course by the OP but that still doesn't change the fact people need to know their devices could stop working after this update.

You're just hiding behind the fear mongering excuse because you hate seeing bad press for Sony for some strange reason, it's not like this is hitting your pocket though is it?

You're kidding right? I'm not sure how to respond to this...did you read the rest of the thread?

really its our own dumb fault that sony did this.  its like that one bad kid in class and the teacher says "if you dont stop him im going to punish all of you."  well none of us stopped those bad kids from hacking the ps3 so we are all getting punished and it really sucks.

Yes I did, this updates disables at least one device, in all likelyhood there will be more.

Carry on attacking the OP though, I expect nothing less in a critical thread in the Sony forums, it's almost as bad as praise threads in the Microsoft forums for it.

Rather than break into a 5 minute rant (if you did this, take a bow), I took five minutes to confirm that...

Nothing vital has been disabled.

USB flash drive works? Check.

APC USB 4 port adapter works? Check.

DCamp 15 in one USB card reader works? Check.

SATA to USB HDD housing works? Check.

HVG2 PS2 USB converter hub works? Check.

PS2 2 Way game pad by Hori works? Check.

And that's about all I need to check offhand to come to the conclusion that the OP either really likes FUD and or trolling, or is a complete idiot incapable of checking sources first hand.

To be fair not everyone has immediate access to their PS3 (for instance, I'm at work and won't be able to look at my PS3 for another six hours probably).

Though I do agree, the article is nonsense.

LMAO!!!!!!! now that's funny, is it more him hating to see bad Sony press or you loving it, it's the latter me thinks, you jumped all over this bogus story because you get hard-on for anything anti-sony, now your defending this crap even though it's been proven wrong

75% is a way lot more than 1 device, that's fear mongering no matter how you put. doubt you would even be here if the title read firmware update disables 1 device and even that could be complete bullshit

wishful thinking as long as Sony's the bad guy right........ find me anything this update disabled...

Don't listen to the fear mongers people.

I just use my USB to transfer a movie (Police Story 3) and some music to my PS3 and it worked like usual, I have the latest firmware.

I can also still use my Genius usb controller which is actually for PC but can work in my PS3 too.

Are you prepared to personally pay for people to buy new HDD's or memory sticks disabled by this update, if not then how about you get off your soap box?

This is an important thread for people to get the information and decide for themselves if they should update or not, it's not fear mongering.

The title make it seems like ALL non Sony branded USB devices won't work anymore, its probably a very small percentage of devices. So far this is what I tested:

-Genius USB controller made for PC

-Samsung 320 GB USB HDD

-Ipod Nano 8 GB 4th generation

-Kingston 4GB Flash Drive

-Apple branded keyboard

-Apple branded mouse

-2GB Compact flash with USB adapter

-8GB Sansa media device made by Scandisk

-Non branded Dualshock clone controller for PC

All of this devices work completely normal for me I have the latest 3.50 firmware
