Well I believe Novasonic is wrong about the forced firmware I can't remember a single game that has forced me to get the latest firmware, what certain games actually DO is update some of the BIOs to support certain functions but while they do this it also checks for homebrew BIOs and disables and replaces them with the original files.

Yeah some discs include the firmware they need to be able to play, it also say so on the PS website on the FW update section, and btw, you can still use a portable HDD, file transferin was NOT disabled

Really?  My PS3 won't detect my files anymore... that sounds like an issue with my PS3...

Yeah, this isnt cool. My new PS3 aint leaving 3.41 firmware.

All I'll play online is Halo REach for the next few anyways so I really ain' missing anything

They will force the update on future games just like they did on RDR. The firmware update was actually on the RDR disc.

Wow...how can they do that? They can limit PSN, but actually have games force updates?

Those people that don't want to lose Other OS can't play RDR?

Exactly, which has always been the real issue with the other OS FW update. Sony claimed that it's only optional and your only loss is access to PSN, but if it ends up you can't play any new release games without the FW update then It's Sony not delivering on the core purpose of the device.

I'm gonna check my HDD functionality tonight to see if I can still back up. I've installed 3.50 fingers crossed it'll be OK. Pretty sure external HDDs should be OK. If "only" 75% of 3rd party USB devices won't work then that means 25% still do.

Don't listen to the fear mongers people.

I just use my USB to transfer a movie (Police Story 3) and some music to my PS3 and it worked like usual, I have the latest firmware.

I can also still use my Genius usb controller which is actually for PC but can work in my PS3 too.

People need to research before they jump to conclusions.

OT. Everything works fine for me.

Well, my USB thumb drive works just like before, so *shrug*

same here so *shrug*

so does my 3rd party steering wheel

No impact on me. I have a USB Hub connected with an 1T external hard drive, Controller charge station all whirring away and they're all fine.

My thumb drive still works too.

Wii games have forced firmare updates on the discs. There no reason the PS3 can't.

how is microsoft smelling like roses in this situation. They are supposed to be the "evil one"...

All they do if you screw around with your 360 is ban you off xbox live, and you really have to be an idiot to get banned..like play MW2 a month early or Jtag your console.

Well I believe Novasonic is wrong about the forced firmware I can't remember a single game that has forced me to get the latest firmware, what certain games actually DO is update some of the BIOs to support certain functions but while they do this it also checks for homebrew BIOs and disables and replaces them with the original files.

But as far back as I can remember PSP games have forced firmware cause you could never take your PSP online ever and be just fine, so it seems the only logical way to get that firmware out anyway.

Also Nintendo has never disabled functions on the Wii via firmware nor has Sony on the PSP, mostly because people just out right hacked the battery and how the fuck can you disable a portables battery?  You can't so they're boned on that one.

Forced PS3 updates are a lot more annoying... especially when I've slowly lost a lot of functions, USB hard drive function (used to play my music from my external), other OS (when I was looking into installing Linux), and now I can't buy a cheap controller *sigh* it's hurt those that have been properly using their PS3

Only two Wii games I played that had me  do a firmware update were Metroid:Other M & Madworld. So yes some Wii games will require a firmware update before playing. PSP did this also with a lot of titles.

How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Ahh alright thanks for the examples I've only come across the BIOs updates I'm guessing cause I generally have my Wii updated anyway
