Forums - Gaming - UK Xbox Boss: “Who Needs Blu-ray?”

This thread needs to stay on topic...the discussion is about is Blu-Ray needed for gaming.  It should be pointed out that he never said blu-ray was dead.  Also I can't tell if it is our original poster or the article that he linked seems to try and play up blu-ray with some sales data.  Anyone that is actually following blu-ray kowns it is not achieving anything near where they want it to be.  But with that being said I blieve their is a need for larger storage capacity in the coming nex-gen of consoles.  I don't think that blu-ray will be the answer to that storage issue as digital download is going to continue to take over market share.  Blu-ray will still have a place as a storage medium it just simply won't be the domiant format that dvd was.  There is just too much competiton in the marketplace.  Look to cable tv vs network television for a good example of where this marketplace will end up.

Another ridiculous claim from the people who brought you "Nobody plays shooters on PC anymore".

Anyway, this thread should be archived, it will be funny to look at it when the specs for the 360 successor will be released.

That's true - though when the successor is announced the costs for each console having a blu-ray drive will have dropped by a factor of 10 since the PS3 launch.  Sony paid the way for blu-ray becoming mass market and affordable for the next gen.

Its just as good as asking who cares about games like Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted 2 or GOd of War 3...and even like asking who gives a damn on Avatar's Blue-Ray...

He is not attacking movies or games...just sayin that bluray is not necessary for a console. And I agree, I'd much rather have sony take out bluray and put in a badass video card when it came out. 8800 GTX for example...

I don't mind installing or swapping discs...which is funny cause MGS4 has manditory chapter isntalls and lots of other PS3 games have installs as well.

I too think it would have been a far easier sell for Sony, in that the end-users would be able to visually see more of a significant difference between the console capabilities, should they have focused more on the RAM and GPU than the CPU and storage medium.

If he thinks Digital Distribution is the future, he should look at the sales of the PSP Go. Bad support aside, it failed miserably, mainly because of it's medium, or the lack of thereof.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

It failed cause it was a high price for recycled tech. Its not like the fat PSP is selling like hotcakes despite being 1/2 the price of PSP go.

no dude, I was done with swapping discs after the ps1 era, Microsoft can can have the badass video card, I'll stick with my lovely blu ray and it's installs, I mean can you imagine it, GT5 on 5 disc...... oh wait 360 fan, you can imagine it. I guess it's one of those you'll never know how good it is until you try it, that statement also goes to the nsmbwii comment.

besides by next gen installs will be a thing of the past as blu ray will be (and already is) an improved technology

Its funny how on one hand you are completely against swappinig disks, while on the other hand you are for bluray and swapping different game discs and not for digital distribution where there is no swaps what so ever. I believe that is what they call an oxymoron.

BTW I have a PS3 too...and I really enjoyed the 3-5 minute installs in MGS4 every chapter. I have yet to play a game which needs me to swap discs on the 360...and you can look through my achievements...I've played a lot of games.

Also, next gen may not be here for a while and may not even use physical storage medium...but do share the any info on sonys brand new "32X bluray drive" which they are going to use in the PS4. Give us the scoop...

Lets use the principle of charity here. He is not completely against swapping disks. Its obvious he is talking about swapping disks in order to continue a streamlined gaming experience.

Who cares about blu-ray Avatar when it is not the 3D version? I will wait for 3D.

Xbox man being a dick about Sony stuff. Typical nonsense, should be ignored until he can provide some sort of proof to back up his claims. Lots of stupid statements coming out of the industry  in the last couple of weeks, the holidays are starting to stir people up.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.
